Linda's Story
I was born in La Crescenta and attended Lincoln Elementary and Clark Junior High before going to Hoover. I was very active in AAU Swimming while at Hoover and often missed out on many of the social opportunities on campus. After graduation, I attended UCLA where I met my husband Tom and graduated with a degree in Anthropology. Shortly before the birth of our first son, Jeff, we moved to Newhall in the Santa Clarita Valley, and have now lived there for over 45 years. Jeff earned a degree in psychology from CSUN and currently works in human resources. After a short stint in baseball with the Detroit Tigers, younger son Don graduated from Cal State Bakersfield with a degree in sociology and designs and monitors landscape systems. We have three grandchildren which, not surprisingly, take up much of our interest and attention. When we moved to Santa Clarita, I began volunteering for many local organizations. ually led to a job as Society Editor of the Newhall Signal -- a post I held for 16 years. Working for the paper's editors, Scott and Ruth Newhall, was an invaluable experience. The paper also provided an excellent backdrop to view and evaluate the events of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. I later worked for the SCV Chamber of Commerce and a drug prevention program called BEST. I now consider myself retired and back to volunteering -- most predominately with the SCV Child & Family Center where I serve as chair of the Auxiliary. When not volunteering and following the grandchildren's activities, I try to keep up with Tom on the golf course and bicycling in 25-mile events. As I see the state of education in this country I count my blessings that I attended schools in the Glendale School District in the 50s and 60s. The teachers I had were inspiring and outstanding. They and my wonderful parents provided excellent role models to follow.
