Lisa's Story

Life Hi! I know it's been too long since my last note, and I have no excuse. None at all. I'm just plain BAD! Anyway, here's what's been going on. The second week end in September was the Eugene Celebration. The entire downtown area is closed to traffic, and there is FREE music (on 7 different stages around town), a bear garden, food booths, information booths about various businesses and services offered in the area, silly contests, craft booths, and even a parade! The entire affair is "rained" over by the SLUG QUEEN! "She" (Or he...in drag of course) is selected yearly through a farce "beauty" pageant, complete with talent (or lack of) contest, formal wear competition, IQ (definitely lacking!) questions, and ending with a formal coronation! This year was the Slug Queen competition's 25th anniversary, so about 12 former and current queens put on a show...guess where?...at the Eugene Public Library! It was quite a production! There was singing, and dancing, and lots of comedy. Everyone left laughing, so the event was a big sucess! Halloween around here is a big event. Not just in my neighborhood which consists mostly of young families, but in all of Eugene. So, in keeping with the spirit of the season, I wore one of the masks I purchased at the Country Fair to work. The mask is leather, with feathers, and beads, and matching earrings (Oh my!) I also had some fairy wings that matched, but I finally realized that if I wore them, I wouldn't be able to get through the bathroom stall doors to restock and clean, so I had to "clip my wings". Darn! I was not the only one who came to work in costume. The entire second floor staff came dressed as gnomes, with matching red pointy hats! There were witches, and wizards (one with glowing blue eyes!), and dancing girls, and a black cat, a bat, Superman, a clown, a guy in drag, a train engineer, a Doctor with a white coat and stethoscope! And that all was just the staff! The kids and young adults that came in were great too! November 6th I was called to jury duty. Oh joy. (Not!) Not only was I called for jury duty, but they put me on Grand Jury, which runs for a month! I was not pleased. Then on top of that, I was appointed lead juror, which means I'm the one who swears everyone in, and signs the inditements authorizing the D.A's office to go to trial! Hey, no pressure here. We are hearings some really grizzly cases, and I really liked having my head in the sand much better! I don't want to know about all this crime in my home town...heck, IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD! I've been doing a split shift, doing jury duty in the morning, going home to eat and nap mid day, and then working at the library evenings. I have no other life. I was so tired Monday night I slept for 13 hours! We are getting a break for Thanksgiving this week, and I am soooo thankful! And the BIG news is...(drum roll please,)... I turned 50 on November 15th! Ta-da! And how did I celebrate? Why, I had Jury duty, of course! And then to work that evening at the library! But I was not about to let the day go by unacknowledged, so there I sat, in the jury box, very solemnly swearing in witnesses, wearing my black birthday t-shirt that read "Oh crap! I'm 50!". I chickened out and didn't wear my crown while on jury duty, but I did wear it all that evening at the library! Now, some places that would have gotten some reaction, or at least some strange looks. But not in Eugene. Everyone took it in stride, and many wished me a Happy Birthday! God I love this town! So, there you have it. All the exciting news in my life. After being on jury duty, I realize I have a boring life... THANK GOD!!! I am so thankful to be happy, able to laugh, relatively healthy, able to take care of myself, to have good friends to laugh with, good dogs, and to be able to enjoy the little things in life!!!! So here's wishing you and yours the same for this holiday season and long, long after!!!! grinning from ear to ear, Lisa B. Wow! Last holiday season was the last time I wrote in here? Shame on me! Well, I did warn you, I'm BAD! For me, summer is the best time of the year! I have lots of energy, things are happening all over town, The sun shines¿well, most of the time, my raspberries ripen (...Expand for more
and I LOOOOOOOOOVE raspberries!), and when it gets too hot, I've got air conditioning! After 5 years in this house with carpeting I HATE, I finally decided to do something about it this spring. I pulled the carpet out of every room in the house except the bedrooms, and had vinyl flooring installed. It¿s a good thing I didn¿t remember how much work this is or I might not have done it¿Well, yes I would. I really HATED that carpet!!! It took me forever to find just the right flooring, and wow! It was on sale! Except they didn¿t have enough to do my house, not even the biggest area, the 19X21¿ living/dinning room! Drat! So, it ended up being a special order, not on sale. Can you hear that cash register ringing? Caching, caching, caching!$$! The sales rep. comes out to get measurements and put together a bid. I asked him at the time about underlayment, and he says that since the house was built relatively recently that shouldn¿t be necessary. I asked if he wanted to pull up a section of the carpet and look at what¿s under there to be sure, and he said no, it should be fine. You all get the drift of where this is going, right? You would think I¿d know better being a contractor¿s daughter, but I let it go. After reviewing the bid, we set a date for the installation¿a one day job with a good sized crew. I had to take a day off from work to be home during the installation, and decided to take a second day off just in case. I spent the next few weeks packing, moving furniture into bedrooms and the garage, pulling up baseboards, pulling up carpet, and pulling staples out of the floor in preparation for the big day. It was worse than moving! And I swore I¿d never do that again! So, the day of the big installation comes, the contractor walks in the door and says¿as you have probably guessed by now¿ ¿Oh, uhm, I can¿t put this flooring down on that. You need underlayment!¿ Caching, caching, caching!$$! Just like that, a one day job turned into a 2 day job. But, by the time I was through with them they paid for most of the additional expense! A couple weeks later, I got to spend my week off (vacation) scraping the caulking of the baseboards, painting them, reinstalling them, and touching them up again! I had to move all the furniture back, and unpack everything! But, after all is said and done, I LOVE MY NEW FLOOR!!!!! It was soooo worth it! I¿ll never have rugs again! WOOOOOO-HOOOOOOO! Did I mention that I hated that carpet!!!! Of course my lovely new floor made all the old wood furniture I inherited look pretty shabby, so I got busier and polyurithaned EVERYTHING! Hmmmmmm. Not bad! Not bad at all!!!! I decided I was due for some fun after all this hard work, so I spent 3 days at the Oregon Country Fair! This is my favorite event of the year! I save up all year just for this event. For those of you who are not familiar with this event from my writing last year, this Fair is a HUGE arts and crafts fair, and includes great food, music on 7 different stages, every form of performing art you can think of (and many you probably can¿t), dust, heat (95 degrees plus), costumes, parades, paths through HUGE trees, Fairy dust, dragons, and good fun times! Oh, I almost forgot! Hippies! Every surviving hippie in the world descends on the Country Fair! Blend all together, shake vigorously, and have one hell of a good time! Friday I shop ¿til I drop!!! Saturday and Sunday I dress in costume, slow down a little, and enjoy the shows, music, food, and people. As I think I¿ve mentioned previously, I love this town! Well, after all this excitement I had to go back to work to relax! I was exhausted!!!! I¿m taking another week plus off the end of August. I need time off from my time off! So far, I¿m planning a dinner party with friends and a craft day with a different group of friends. I¿m hoping to hold it at that, but all these other projects keep creeping into my head¿.. I hope you all are having a great summer, doing what ever it is that makes your heart sing, and gives you that little giggle way down deep in the pit of your soul. As they say, ¿life is short, eat dessert First.¿ I would add ¿oh heck, eat dessert any time you want!¿ ;-D A very happy, Lisa B.
