Lisa's Story

OK-getting divorced is not fun, but compared to the stock market crash it seems quite painless and liberating! I have a great job and get to use my anthrology skills every day. I enjoy the aspects of my job that involve helping people overseas. Right now I am working on rebuilding Afghanistan with my company , with a medical group in Afghanistan and an "eco village" project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I also just began a large project with the Community for Creative Non-Violence, DC's only 24-7 Homeless shelter. I do websites, brochures, newsletters, etc. Life I am very happy. I used to judge myself by my accomplishments (which do matter to me but which I now realize are not actually the sum total of me) but now I don't judge myself: I just enjoy! So, I have published three books and am writing a fourth. I worked at the Smithsonian for 8 years in the Anthropology Department of the Natural History Museum, researching, writing books and producing exhibits...Expand for more
. I speak Thai and have lived in Thailand off and on for 17 years. I worked for the King of Thailand for a while and wrote a biography of him. I am now a video and multimedia producer. I have written a lot of poetry. Sonnets are a challenge. My next book might be a collection of poems (Thanks Mr. Roylance, Dr. Nalls, Mrs McFarland, Miss Stubbs, and Mr Weast!). My daughter Erin is a senior at a small college in Vermont. I assisted my son Scott in dying his hair green (a gesture of creativity, rather than rebelliousness, he assures me). Unfortunately, Scott didn't finish up at Stuart. It's a pity, but he absolutely hated high school. He got his GED and started NOVA at age 15 and is doing well. The best thing is he is an accomplished chef and works part time at Willow in Arlington. I am very busy keeping up with my yougest boy, Edward James Julian McQuail Chavez, who was 4 years old on May 2nd, 2008. I feel very lucky to have had a healthy baby boy at age 44!
