Lisa's Story

I'm enjoying life to its fullest or at least giving it some attention and effort. At the moment I'm midway through my longest vacation, 10 weeks. I wish I could say I got this long just for fun, as it's the longest I've taken in 28 years. One to two weeks are all I usually allow myself and lots of extended weekend trips. This summer, having chosen a little surgery in July, I've taken my six weeks recoup and then added on vacation in a fell swoop, three + weeks. My husband, Joe, and I have opted to go to MN, a 4-night Royal Carribbean Mexico shorty cruise, and in late September a jaunt in CA to boot for a concert! I'll have some work in snippets in between trips, but right now I'm on week five and loving it. Whoa, I've even found time to write a story for "Classmates" and planned a home remodel project. A wise man told me that who we are on vacation is who we really are. For years I've defined myself by my work. Interesting concept in philosophy. It's probably quite true. I feel more myself on a relaxing vacation. As I've already gone on at length about my playtime, I'll dwell for a moment on my work life. I'm a court reporter by profession. I love it and wouldn't want to do anything else that I can think of, in particular. I started court reporting in 1980 as soon as I turned 19 and could get my notary. It's a three, four-year program, but I lucked out and was allowed to double it up and get elective high school credits for the private court reporting school, so I went through it while finishing high school. People may know me from my various schools and some will more memorably remember me from kicking back and laughing with me through it all and, yes, laughing at it all and at myself. Court reporting isn't for everyone, but it's been great for me, type A and a multi-tasker that I am. I'm the one with the funny little machine that takes everything down, as I often describe it. I mosty do depositions but I cover court work on occasion as well as a substitute for reporters out on vacation, sick, or just plain overload with visiting judges or heavy trial calendars. Since I had my first son in high school (I went to Cyesis for a while as in the day they encouraged us off to our own world for that sort of thing, if people think back to the crowd of nonpregnant people on campus). The school district via my mom's intervention set up a special program for me which allowed me to go to Legal Arts of Arizona and take Court Reporting which counted for my electives. If it weren't for that, I would have been set back a few years and ended up doing who knows what. As it was, I graduated one year late from Maryvale and two years early from court reporting school. I had my son in May of my sophomore year, took the summer off, when to Phx Union vocational school taking machine shorthand to try that out my junior year, and I did my required courses via correspondence and those that required attendance at various campuses (I recall one at Central). I had my daughter in my senior year in January. I was primarily in the thick of the mix with people from Desert Sands (Orchestra -- violin) and at Maryvale I suppose it would be orchestra and Thespians, my participation being the orchestra pit. Wizard of Oz stands out brightest. It seemed like I started out all wrong in high school going from straight As for my first eight years plus and then sometime in my freshman or sophomore year having a dip when I gravated to hanging out the wall before school and during breaks, taking lunch at the park, and habitually being late, not literally, but you know what I mean. Well, it was the '70s. I had gone to Sunset for elementary for those that count the tree back that far. Some of my friends were from first grade and we stayed in synch all the way through high school and beyond. My grades went back to the A track once I was pregnant and back to the business of success. Nowadays it seems like lunches and special occasions are the main times to catch up with school friends, that and trips out to visit a special friend out of town, but I long for being better about staying in contact and having more of a social life with friends from "the day" that live in Arizona. Workwise, I've run my own business for 28 years, Nance Reporting. I was truly a sole proprietor entity for 12 years, '86-'98, having four other reporters and several support staff. I went to work for a judge for a couple years then at Maricopa County Superior Court. I only lasted there a couple years as 8:00 to 5:00 bored me to death having been used to the wide variety in days and hours freelance court reporting can provide. Since 2002 I have subbed myself out about 80 percent as an Arizona rep for a national court reporting firm. I love the support staff that provides and not having to do any of the nonreporting aspects. I handle a few private clients I've kept over the years of my own, but it's great to just cover the Arizona needs for Atkinson-Baker, Inc. as an independent contractor. I'm married and happily so to the father of my first son born in 1977. We're coming up on...Expand for more
31 years. Joe and I were married in the fall of 1977 when I was 16! Yikes! Couldn't get by with that in this day and age! Ha! It was the right move for us both, though. He was 19 and working, so we were able to make it back in those early days. He's a big part of my world. We started off in a modest, tiny, but nice trailer at 1110 West Maryland and have owned a few houses since then. We're at 43rd Avenue just north of Maryland now in a place we've owned for 15 years. Seems neither of us like to move. I would rather remodel 8 times than pack up my memories and go to a spot further from city central. Court reporting means lots of the downtown locations for assignments mixed with days at the convention resort locales. As of last year Joe is retired on medical disability. It was a huge change and adjustment at first, but now I wouldn't put things back to the old schedule as we have time for ourselves and our fun now. We can travel and be together a lot, spend time with the grandkids, see our parents more and help the moms out. It works out well. Joe was a mechanic for Ford, primarily at Sanderson Ford where he spent 20+ years of his 27 years with Ford dealerships. Car dealerships don't give a lot of vacation, two weeks per year and that's it, so it is a joy to be able to take the time we do now and have three- and four-day weekends at our whim. The big plus to court reporting is I can take jobs when I want or block out whatever days I choose. It means I don't work those days, but there's no permission slips involved except at night to my pillow: Gee, can we afford to take another day off? Hrm.... Work hard first and after and sure, why not. Seems I can usually win those arguments with myself. You get the jist of which side I'm on. We have 3 children and 3 grandchildren. My oldest son is in CA with 2 little girls (they're in the pic). He's a computer program in Kern County and graduated from California Lutheran University where he met his wife. My daughter is the blonde in the pic I have up and works as a charge ER nurse here in town with her BSN from Grand Canyon. She has a son who is 10. Our youngest lives with us at home with his girlfriend who I adore while they are finishing up college. He works for Fast Signs as a graphic designer and installer. We spend a lot of time up north at a family cabin in Groom Creek which is just up the mountain in the Prescott area. That's a nice get-away that is easy to reach. I'm so glad my mom bought that place 21 years ago. It's been a blessing to the whole family. When I look at where I was and where I am I think: I always wanted to be a writer or a concert violinist when I was growing up. Doctor entered my mind as well, but writer or concert violinist seemed more at grasp. My family and friends thought that was a good fit for me. As it turns out, they were wrong, or perhaps right, court reporting is a bit of writing but nothing like I imagined. Family, life's necessities, and the desire for money bumped into the way of what I thought my path would be to make a shorter highway. When they happen, you never know which way those little forks you take in the road of life are going to change your whole future. I like where mine has gone. I wouldn't change a thing. Besides dreaming about trips and thinking and plotting them, I find relaxing to be a sought-after commodity. A great massage is always a sure trick but pricy. A good bottle of wine works nicely with some friends and conversation to ease it along. I just joined a gym, Bally's, so hopefully that will soon be part of my list for great endorphin blasts. Travel is not as relaxing as exciting, but I sure relax once I'm home again for those few hours, usually a day and a half, before I'm crazy busy with work again. It sure is easier now that we're not toting kids and diaper bags or leaving at 6:00 p.m. Friday with a tight schedule due to Joe's work. This story wizard idea prompter has for an idea sharing the wildest thing I ever did in school. Whoa, for Lisa Thompson's wildest, that requires an evening and three bottles of wine along with a big disclaimer for protecting the innocent. Drop a line. We can laugh about old times. I hope to hear from some dear old friends and even slight acquientances. We love to go to and throw parties, so perhaps we can even catch up sometime if I know your contact info and can let you in on a party flier invite. Take care and smile, it's a fabulous day! What else can I toss in about myself? I like wine, winery trips, camping, spas, travel, doing ceramics, cooking, decorating, remodeling, grandkids, the ocean, antiquing, and... well, I get busy and do a lot of reporting, so laughing about attorneys is always a sly turn after a bottle of wine (oops, if you are an attorney, I mean "the other side" of course)! Going out to fun restaurants, clubs, friend's and family's homes for dinner, drinks, dessert, and, of course, concerts and comedy clubs are a blast. I'd love to hear from old friends and acquaintances and even those that were in the day that I didn't know well. Write me! Lisa
