Lisa's Story

The now picture is brand new. I took it myself using my new MacBook Pro laptop. The then picture is one my sister and I had taken for my parents in late 1973. Well, let's see...I left Florida and I have never moved back. I have lived in Southern California; Portland, OR; Palo Alto, CA; and now Lowell, MA. Currently, I work for F5 Networks as a technical writer. My oldest son graduated cum laude from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Computer Science and works for Cisco Systems. He is married with two children. My second son got his Masters in Mechanical Engineering from UC Davis, works for Lockheed and he is married and lives in CA. My daughter graduated Bentley College, got married, moved to Austin and they have a son and daugher. I am married for the second time and life is good! College I graduated in 1992 from San Jose State University in San Jose State California. My first years of college happened after high school when my dad got transfered to California. He was one of the lucky two percent of aerospace engineers to keep his job. I first went to Golden West College and later to Orange Coast College, where I got my AA degree. I got married and moved to Oregon, where my ex-husband and I had three children. I did not get back to college until 1989. I have to admit that going to college later was a very enjoyable experience and I had a great time. I majored in English and minored in German. I have taken a ton of classes after my BA. I also have half of a Master's Degree in Human Factors from Bentley College. Workplace My career really took off with my job at Bay Networks. At Bay, I worked in Sales Development writing proposals for the biggest sales deals in the company. It was a challenging and rewarding position. I left Bay in 1998, just ...Expand for more
before the Nortel aquisition took place. In June 1998, I went to work for EMC corporation and at EMC I participated in the development of their first Sales Web site. I worked as a project manager on the design, implemenation, and finally as webmaster of this successful sales web site. At the peak of the dotcom boom, I took a position at Furniture.com as a project manager. Working at Furniture was like going to grad school for what not to do at a dotcom. After six months, they offered me a full-time job and I told my manager I loved working for her, but I predicted they would not be there in six months. They filed Chapter 11 six months later after burning through 150 million dollars of venture capital. After leaving Furniture.com, I retreated into the safe waters of telecommunications, an industry I loved. I got a position as a technical writer at Avici Systems. The company was pre-IPO and a very hot start-up. We went public in 2000, one of the last really hot IPO's before the dotcom bust. The company was featured on 48 Hours. The stock shot up to 194 dollars a share and I had visions of an early retirement. On paper, I had my hands firmly on the brass ring! Unfortunately, the technology sector boom was about to come to an abrupt end. A little more than a year after our hot IPO, I was laid off and my stock options became worthless. I was unemployed for four months and was fortunate to get a senior technical writing job at Symantec Corporation, and was promoted to Principal Writer. I resigned my job in 2005. After Symantec, I worked for a startup called BlueNote Networks. I set up a documentation department, hired two previous managers to support this exciting company. This company ended after I was there for about three years. I now work for F5 Networks.
