Lisa's Story
Life
Life is good. Single mom with two great kids aged 17 and 14. I have been a band director for the past 23 years. Most of those years I have been teaching high school band. I am currently teaching at a large high school. I spend most of my Friday evening either at a football game or basketball game with about 70-140 teenagers playing all of my favorite pep band songs. My daughter is in my band and my son will be there next year.
I really cannot believe I am 45 years old! It really is just a number! I am not letting it slow me down or stopping me from learning or trying new things.
I am looking for 'the one' to spend the rest of my days with. I know he is out there and one of these days he will fall out of the sky when I am not looking. For now I am enjoying being a mom and teacher and taking it one day at a time.
School
As I look back on my high school days, I really was a band geek. I was a little shy, although around my band friends I don't think I was. I knew early on I was going to be a band director. I have never regretted that decision. Terry Turner did have a big influence on me and I am thankful for his guidance and his belief in me.
College
Loved college. Loved it so much I went back for more! After graduating in 1985 with my education degree, I taught for a couple of years and then went back and worked on my masters degree. It took me two summers and a couple of sem...Expand for more
esters, but it was worth it. It was tough teaching full time while working on a recital. Not sure how I did it. I see colleagues working on their masters while teaching full time now and I am sure glad that is behind me.
I have no plans on getting a doctorate. Too old, wouldn't see a return in my investment and I would make a terrible student now that I have taught for this long!
Workplace
Ah, the life of a high school band director. First class at 6:50 a.m. done around 3:00 p.m. Responsible for 150 students - 2 jazz bands, 3 concert bands and a percussion ensemble. We perform at 4-5 home football games and 10 basketball games each year. On top of that, we have 3 concerts, a couple of jazz festivals, two jazz nights and a major trip every three years - Disneyland here we come!
I still look forward to making music everyday. There is never a dull moment and the kids challenge me every day to make them better. I am fortunate to work with great kids, parents and administrators. I am very supported at school and in the community. We have a great program and we continue to improve the quality and quantity each year.
I am not sure how many more years I can do this. I would love to work 4 more years and then sell everything and move to the San Juans! But, I probably will continue what I am doing or go into administration. Not sure I have what it takes to be an administrator, but we will see.
