Liz's Story

Life. Curve balls. Survival. I grew up in Redding, California. a long time ago in another lifetime. I am the baby of the family, with an older brother and two older sisters. I married in 1983, in love with an ambitious young Air Force man. We moved around a little, had two beautiful sons, and eventually made roots in Oregon. Divorced 13 years later, sighs of relief, aftermath to follow. Fast forward to 2006. I was strongly considering attending the reunion, when just after my Dad's 84th birthday in August, we learned he had a tumor, brain cancer, and not long to live. I drove back and forth - Portland to Redding to get in some last visits. And thankfully he passed in a reasonably short amount of time, and without too much discomfort. We were all gathered with him, and it was peaceful, almost beautiful, more like a birth than a death in watching his jovial spirit leave the broken old container that most of us leave behind some day. Just over a year later, in 2007, I would also say a much more difficult goodbye to my youngest son who was only 18. He suffered for over three years with depression, and chemical dependency (street drugs, and the ones the doctors introduced him to - not that I'm bitter) before he took his life. Let's just say, after hospital stays, rehab, and 'in-patient treatment' that allowed him to walk away because 'that's the law for an adult' -- if I come across anyon...Expand for more
e facing similar circumstances, I'd tell them to find alternative treatment in another country -- it may actually work. Last year, my older son had enough stoner-stagnation with his dad, and friends in Eugene, and decided to try something new -- living drug free with his mom in Portland. Was I afraid? Of course, because it hadn't worked out so well with his brother. How's it going? He's happily drug free -- and thankfully so, because he had to do drug and background checks to get the job. He loves his job, and I'm happy to be watching his life progress. Last year, I also lost my job of 5 years. Yeah, my life is so awesome lately, right? I hated that job. The small company I worked for was completely dysfunctional and was lucky enough to get an 8-month vacation, with pay, thanks to unemployment, to get over it. So now what? I wasn't finding work in Portland, so I started sending out resumes to Hawaii, Florida, New York, and Redding... all places I'd go with friends or family nearby. But fate pulled me back to my roots in Redding. I recently got a great new job - and hard to believe in this place, given the economy. I'm living with my mom, in the house where I grew up... and paying the mortgage of my home in Portland... where my son is living. Who'd a thunk?! An English proverb says "a smooth sea never made a skilled mariner" .. I guess I'm a journeyman at this point! What's next?
