Jeffery's Story

After high school, I got a scholarship in Physics went to the University of Utah with a dual major in Math & Physics, and was enrolled in the Honors Program. I was doing pretty well, until I started playing the arcade game of "Street Fighter 2". I did well with that - was the state champion, and went to the national tournament, but I stopped paying attention to school, and stupidly dropped out just a year or so before getting my degrees. I sure wish I hadn't. In '92, I married a fabulous girl who I had been friends with for several years: Dawna Naylor. We were sealed in the LDS temple, and we have had 6 children together, currently aged from 14 to 3. (and we are still married, and still like each other quite a lot. :) I was working at McDonald's during college when a friend convinced me to apply for a job with him to Packard Bell ("PB"). I got the job. Sadly, he didn't get one of the positions. Thus I began my downward spiral into the mire of troubleshooting computers. I was the first person to attain the rank of "Technician Level 5", which occurred just before PB split with NEC Computers. As my new years celebration in 2001, I was laid off for making too much money (it real...Expand for more
ly didn't seem like it was very much). But coincidentally, a few weeks previously a friend that I had worked with at PB asked if I would be interested in coming to work with them at Digital Signature Trust ("DST"). So I quickly had a new job, and a severance payout from NEC. That helped nicely with the bills! At DST, I learned a great deal about cryptography, PKI, and security. I eventually became the team lead & manager of the Customer Support team. Note: I'm not so keen on managing, and much prefer to be a tinkerer. In Dec. 2006, a friend (from PB) asked if I would be interested in interviewing for a job at a company he had very recently joined: Xennsoft. As much as I loved the people at DST, there were no openings there that would allow me to keep learning and growing, so I took the job at Xennsoft, which is where I am now (as of 2008). I am the team lead (which unfortunately means: Manager as well as Tech) of the Network Engineering & System Administration groups, where we oversee, maintain and implement anything related to security, computers or infrastructure. Aside from work, I am active in my church, enjoy playing with my family, and tinker with computer "stuff" at home.
