Lois's Story

Life My Spouse jim? met him in 1978. we lived in the same apartment building. we met when i borrowed his plunger. the rest is history! he retired as a partner (patent law) with a large law firm in the sears tower in 2005. he studies glassblowing as a hobby, along with gardening, investments and involvement with chicago area theatres. My Pets one cat at a time. currently we are parents of one "fur child" - her name is LucyFur Scissorhands and she's a wacky calico who likes ham and parmesan cheese, chasing bunnies and tormenting anything smaller than herself. My Kids all my kids are stepkids (phew). karl, the phd, is in washington, d.c. as an electrical engineer for the government - married with one child. jamie is in wisconsin with wife and 3 children. he is a p.e. teacher for teens in a residential facility for troubled and behavioral disorder kids/wards of the state. and daughter kate is in the food/beverage industry in the phoenix area. being a "step" made parenting a breeze and put me in good stead to be "granny lo" to four very nutty and great grandkidlets. My work? I am a Life Coach - under the name of "reflective beings" - i help folks - either face to face - or over the phone get "unstuck" on life issues. i very much enjoy working with folks who have an interest in the arts (either actively or as patrons) - and i specialize i helping adult children and spouses who are facing the decline and then death of a parent or spouse ... and help that person define what their role is in this journey - as "caregiver" is not a healthy choice when you're so emotionally attached to the person who's declining ... it's a slippery slope and one we ALL face. ... how does one best stand graveside without guilt, hurt, resentment - and, instead fully love and honor the dying person for that last journey. it's a compelling road we must all take - and those who are destined to remain DO have choices. i am also taking an intensive study program in january 08 to be certified as 'dream coach' - to help folks think about, name and then create a plan to achieve their dreams - whatever they may be ... perhaps you'd like to talk? School dekalb and high school in the late 60's was a great time - even if we were in our teens and awkward and socially unfit to wander without supervision! looking back 30+ years, it seems rather amazing that we COULD just wander free - and put ourselves in harm's way enough times to learn vauable lessons ... seeing many classmates for a communal 50th b'day party showed me that the "lines of demarcation" are no longer present - and if we're alive now, we deserve to just "be" ... still a hippie who believes in the possibility of peace. College college was NIU - BS in Ed with majors in art and theatre, minor in speech communication. always involved in a show - either technically or onstage or directing - always working 20+ hours a week at the front desk of the univ. library - which was really a very cool job - although i still view license plates and think of where, if a book, t...Expand for more
hey'd be shelved! LOVED the social scene of the theatre dept. and the friends and wacky parties. college was a wonderous time. but after an entire lifetime in dekalb, i was ready to say buh-bye! :) Workplace at present, after yet another reinvention of myself, i'm a certified life coach - with my private practice called reflective beings. i have been working in this realm since january, 2006 - becoming certified in july, 2006 and then getting certification as a "dream coach" (dreams that you aspire to achieve) in january, 2008. for the blow by blow, read on ... after college, i pounded a typewriter at a few different chicago offices. worked for a CPA firm - NOT for me. worked for a hotel marketing company - MORE like me, but not satisfying. found a job doing market development for an audiovisual production company (corporate communications) that did multi-projector slide shows (remember SLIDES?), video, corporate conference design, special events, etc. segued from being an employee there into having my own production company - corporate comedy - which i ran and also served as writer/producer/director of corporate humor and events. this was during the 80's when there was more corporate money for what was considered "fluff". when those budgets dried up, i turned more to speech writing and meeting planning. then, in 1996, i closed up shop and have been doing an assortment of things - working on a book, several playwriting projects, produced a women's lecture series in chicago (based out of toronto) and worked with five celebrity women for one season (mary tyler moore, linda ellerbee, sarah ferguson, maya angelou and lauren bacall), then worked as the house manager for the chicago production of "blue man group", which i did for 2.5 years. in 2006, i entered a program and am now certified as a life coach and am thrilled to running my practice, "reflective beings" where i serve a variety of folks who get "stuck" in life - real issues - tangible and emotional - and, in a trusting, open exchange of conversation and "hard questions", we work together to find a solution that's "unstuck" and more comfy ... it's a slippery slope to sort. and i'm pleased to offer objective and caring eyes and ears to help forward motion occur. recently completed 12 years as a board member for the guild for the blind (chicago) but currently serve on the advisory council of and am an associate with chicago's award-winning and professional american theater company. Military this is not an arena where i have any experience - however, i respect those who have served - voluntarily or not - and honor those who've guarded and protected our country - and mourn those who never came home or those who came home so profoundly changed - for whatever the reasons ... ultimately, peace, in my mind, is the goal - and one i'd HOPE we eventually achieve. if people could only sit and listen and speak and hear ... it's not all that difficult - but leaving egos outside the door seems to not be an option ... ergo, the fuel ... god help us all.
