Lois's Story

After high school, I attended U.C. Berkeley, where I discovered that the arts and humanities were far more interesting and a far better use of my natural talents than the sciences. So, in 1981, I completed the Bachelor's program in Art, with an emphasis in painting and drawing. As a fallback solution to avoid becoming a starving artist, I also completed an M.B.A. program, with an emphasis in Marketing, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1984. During my first year at Michigan, I received word that my mother had breast cancer. Dad lovingly took care of her while I finished my second year of classes. After a rigorous routine of radiation and chemotherapy, she passed away in February 1984, just two months before I received my M.B.A. The sixteen years after grad school have been spent as a marketing communications (or marcom) specialist/consultant/manager, developing advertising/promotional literature and overseeing company presence at trade shows for the fast-paced tech and biotech sectors. I've had the privilege of working at top Silicon Valley companies such as Apple Computer, Silicon Graphics and Becton-Dickinson. I flourished, however, in smaller, lesser-known companies that offered me a wider scope of responsibility and greater autonomy. My favorite area in marcom was event marketing, in which I gained hands-on experience in the logistics of trade shows like Comdex and Macworld. About halfway during those sixteen years, in 1992, I took an eight-month break to be a full-time caregiver for my father during his initial recovery period after he suffered a major stroke. Following those eight months, we moved him to Montana, where my older sister, Ellen, and her family cared for him until his passing in December 2002. g efforts financially. As I reached my early forties, promoting products "got old" and I became more interested in applying my skills toward promoting causes or organizations I support. Since I've been a Christian for over twenty years, employment at a church was a viable option. For the past several years, I've been working as a Ministry Assistant at a Presbyterian church south of San Francisco, where I have the privilege of supporting outreach and educational programs, services and events through the design and production of print and online communications. I also oversee and maintain their computer systems. Also, since May 2002, I've been married to my husband, Scott, who is a clinical director for a school counseling program in East Palo Alto. This is the first marriage for both of us. Scott has proven to be an excellent friend, companion and partner in life, so I'm very grateful to have waited as long as I did to "settle down" with him. We collaborate on creative projects - his pottery and my writing and illustration. We serve together in intercessory and altar prayer ministries at our church; and we have seen God move powerfully in the healing of individuals, both physically and spiritually. We also team up in caring for his elderly mom and aunt - both delightful "Southern Belles" from Texas - who live with us. A little trivia: While in college, dated a session musician who worked with country music legend, Glen Campbell. Taught myself how to play the acoustic guitar in my late twenties. It's never too late to learn something new! Toured Europe "on the cheap" with friends in my early thirties - London, Paris, Florence, Rome, Venice and Salzburg. Celebrated turning 30 with a 30-mile bike ride, did a 40-mile bike ride after turning 40. I will probably attempt a half-century ride sometime in my fifties.
