Lois's Story
I was quiet in high school. Good student. I liked writing poetry and reading. However I did get involved with Save the Whales, and Protect the Tidal Marshes of Our Coastline. Enjoyed camping, hiking and the like. I graduated in the June of 1966. After a year working mostly with a new program called Head Start. Then I decided to go on to college. I majored in Child Development and Family Relations at the University of Connecticut, graduating in 1971. I served as teacher-coordinator for Head Start for two years. Then I decided to travel, which I did stateside, landing in Omaha, Ne. the fall of 1973. Here I put down roots, even though I missed the seaside and my hometown of Groton, Ct. My sister Nancy had moved here earlier. I earned a B.S. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education at the University of Nebraska in Omaha, and my teaching certificate. My teaching experience includes : Special Ed Preschool and Kindergarten, Directress with ...Expand for more
Montessori, Travelling teacher for SPED preschoolers through ENHSA, Family Support Worker -Homebased with individuals with developmental delays, and finally ending my 28 plus year career with ENHSA working with medically fragile individuals with developmental and physical disabilities. I retired Dec 2014. There was a two year interval (May 1987 to the fall of 1988) where I served as a volunteer teacher and helped to start a school. I travelled throughout Mexico, Central and South America. Recently I took a cruise to Alaska (the 49th state I've visited) and British Colombia. Of all my experiences, the greatest was adopting and raising my sister's grandchildren who are now 23 and 21. So being popcorn mom, enchilada mom, girl scout cookie mom, scout leader and the like have been most fulfilling. I've been involved in many causes, social justice issues, and the like! But nothing beats being Mom to Maria and Fernando! Lois Navarro Class of 1966
