Lola's Story
After graduating from High School, I went on to college where I promptly bombed out as I discovered that I would rather party and play than study. I went on to secretarial school and ended up working at Bauchman's Electric for a few years and then the Atomic Energy Commission in Canoga Park California.
I returned to school in 1972 and ended up with a BA in Sociology with a Social Work Emphasis in 1974.
I worked for the Department of Health and Welfare Mental Health Services Mental Health Center in Pocatello, Idaho as a Therapist for 8 years. During that time I provided both indivdual and group therapy as well as worked with victims of sexual abuse and abusers.
In 1983 I transferred to Child Protection Services in Blackfoot, Idaho and worked there for 4 years.
In 1987, I moved to Spokane, Washington to work as a therapist at Lutheran Community Services, providing both individual and group sessions to victims of sexual abuse. I also worked for the Child Welfare System within Lutheran and designed and ran a program for Sexually Reactive/Sexually Aggressive Kids.
I left Lutheran to enter private practice in 1996, continuing to work with children and their families.
I attended graduate school and graduated with a Master's in Social Work. In 1999 I was hired by the State of Washington Child Protective Services as a Social Worker III. I am currently a Family Voluntary Serv...Expand for more
ices Worker which means I am the last chance stop between families and the dependency system. I love my job as I spend the majority of my time with kids and their families working on what they feel is necessary to get themselves out of the CPS system.
In September of 2001, I was diagnosed with Infiltrating Ductile Carcinoma (breast cancer), stage two and had a modified radical mastectomy. I did both chemotherapy and radiation and have now been cancer free for the past 9 years.
I own my own home and am in the continual process of redoing it as it is 105 years old. It will always be a work in progress.
I have continued to work for the State of Washington as a Social Worker. In September of this year 2011, I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, not something I was happy to hear after ten years in remission. I am back to taking Femara and watching my hair fall out. Who said bald wasn't beautiful. I also continue to work on my house, spend times with friends and generally enjoy life. I am looking forward to retirement but havent yet figured out when I will accomplish that and what I will do afterwards.
I am beginning to prepare for retirement by choosing a date - December 31, 2016. In the mean-time I along with my sister and my favorite contractor are doing lots of house remodeling - both inside and outside. That tends to keep me pretty busy and out of trouble.
