Loren's Story
Life
Life after El Molino has had it's ups and downs.
Decided that military life was just a phase that I got over. Got married and have two daughters and two step-daughters, all now grown. Only 11 grandkids
We moved around a lot. Ohio, California, Michigan, and now Kentucky. On my last job before retirement to who knows where.
College
I didn't go to school until long after El Molino.
Was married and had 2 kids and a deadend job, decided to change gears.
Went to the JC and got an Associate of Science in Computer Information Science plus a programmer's certificate.
Retired from the Water Agency right afterwards and have been in the computer field ever since.
Workplace
After 4 years of active duty, I went into the reserves and worked.
First at Windsor Water - digging ditches, reading water meters, working the sewer plant.
After about 6 months I started working at the Sonoma County Water Agency as a Water Treatment Plant Operator II. Spent the next 14 and a quarter years there, taking a deferred retirement in September 1996.
Became a software developer for a small company in Rohnert Park. Spent 6 years there until the dot com bust. Lost my job in 2002.
Worked at a couple of different companies in Santa Rosa writing computer software and network and database administration.
Moved to Cleveland, Ohio in mid 2004. Worked as a contract IT type for a year. IT Manager at a windows manufacturering company, programmer at a multi-n...Expand for more
ational conglomerate, collection agency, and power plant.
Then I spent a year and a half at Sterling Jewelers, the largest Jewelry company in America a Business Analyst. It's headquarters is in Akron, Ohio and they own Kay's, Jareds, Goodman's. J.B. Robinson and about 18 other brands. Interesting work and a great discount on jewelry.
Just moved back to California in May of this year. I work for the Department of Defense at the old Fort Ord, Monterey, California. I am a Business Analyst for the DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) the medical system for the servicemen and women, their families and retired military folks..
Then off a multitude of jobs before getting back in the utility world programming computers.
Military
I went into the Army right after El Molino.
Basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri August-September 1977. Hot and humid. Ran into Mike Ottolini there.
From there I went to the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, Presidio of Monterey, California for Arabic. Went from student to staff member and stayed for 3 years.
Next stop Fort Rucker, Alabama - Flight school helicopters. UH-1H 'Huey'. After flight school I chose to go into the Army Reserves.
Stayed another 4 years in various reserve units 91st Infantry Division, 126th Air Ambulance Company, 352nd Evac Hospital. Ran into Mike Ottolini on several tours.
Ended my service 4 September 1986 with 9 years, 1 month, 4 days.
