Loren Woodward:

CLASS OF 1964
Federal way, WA

Loren's Story

Summers during high school I worked as a union carpenter's apprentice for Canyon Homes out of Kent. Our crew put in a foundation on Monday, stripped the forms and built the floor frame on Tuesday, framed the walls ready for roof truss delivery on Wednesday, framed and sheeted the roof on Thursday, installed exterior doors and windows, ready for subcontractors, on Friday and did it all over the following week. Skills learned working for Canyon Homes served me well ever since. I spent six years at the U of W and serving active duty for the National Guard. I graduated with a degree in Building Technology and Administration from the College of Architecture and became a No. 4 Crewman on a nuclear missile launch crew. For a year after graduation from the UW, I lived on Portage Bay, traveling with a friend in his new Cessna 185. We saw an America Cup race off Rhode Island from the air and on board a US Destroyer, made trips across the Southwest and into Mexico, flew into norther British Columbia on floats to lakes where you got a trout to bite on every cast. My first job after college was for Jack Benaroya Construction doing quantity takeoffs. The company shrank from 120 to 40 employees within six weeks of me being hired due to the Boeing depression of the early 1970s. I left voluntarily after sitting in at a workstation with no windows and no work for more than a week They were kind enough to lay me off so I could get unemployment benefits. I used the funds to start my own design and build construction company specializing in residential and small commercial projects. My first two projects were floating homes in Portage Bay. I eventually incorporated my construction company...Expand for more
into my family real estate business and worked fifteen-hour days, seven day-weeks until I burned out in the mid 1980s when I closed both the real estate office and construction company. In 1988 two construction associates and I formed a home inspection business. We worked doing pre-purchase home inspection for home buyers until retirement. The only class reunion I attended was our 10th. I married a few days after that and will celebrate our 50th Anniversary a few days after our 60th Class Reunion this summer. We have a daughter in Arizona and a son in Washington. Right after Covid took over our society I was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer. It took 1.5 years to work through surgery, radiation and chemo followed by another 4.5 months of chemo and a second surgery. My wife was instrumental in my recovery, encouraging me to continue when I was ready to bail on the last two chemo infusions. Just when we thought we were getting past all the medical stuff she found out her cervical vertebrae were collapsing and had emergency complex spinal surgery. The surgery was a success, but she had to re-learn how to walk, use her hands, eat and drink without choaking and spent five weeks in rehab. When she came home, I became the full-time caretaker. A year later she was still struggling with recovery and her spinal surgeon recommended she have her painful hips replaced. She now has new hip joints and is back to doing most of the things she did previously. That frees me to get back to work on my apartment rebuild project, reconstructing a four unit building from the foundation up, using the skills learned while working for Canyon Homes. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
