Loretta's Story
After graduating from RFHS in '77, I went to Illinois State University - graduating in 1980 with a BS in Art: Photography & Graphics (Both BC - before computers), a concentration in business and Early Childhood Education. After graduation, I moved to Rochester, MN. in 1981, married James (Jim) Verbout from Sterling, IL (Newman class of '75). We have two beautiful children. Our daughter is married and lives in Edmonds, WA, and our son is still single, living in Winona MN.
Upon moving to Rochester in 1980, I worked at Curt's Photography, Mayo Clinic as a phlebotomist, Tandy Leather, & Shopko, before deciding to be a stay at home mom. During the time of raising our children, I created my own business "Photos by Verbout'", through which I spent weekends doing family portraits, weddings, special events, anniversaries and more. Along with this, I also did silk floral arrangements for everything!!!!
In 1995, I went 'back to work' by becoming a Camp Coordinator for Courage Center's Summer Youth Camp in Rochester. I did this for 2 years and loved working with the children with special needs in the Southeastern Minnesota region. At the same time I took on the part time position of Outreach Coordinator for a non-profit promoting sports & recreation for individuals with special needs (disabled) in the SE MN Region. rom offering 5 different integrated programs and 35 individuals to 25 different programs and over 350 individuals actively participating in leisure and recreational activities in the community of Rochester and surrounding area. In 2008, I had started to transition to a part time position with the organization as Arts Director & Development Director. June 2009, my position was unexpectedly 'dissolved'. Thus I moved on to my next great adventure.
2006, I joined a group of artists from Mantorville, MN, a small town about 18 miles west of Rochester. The 5 of us, worked over the coming year to develop and create the non-profit that is now active and known as The Mantorville Art Guild - Gallery & Studio, Inc.. At the same time I decided to create my own NEW business - Verbout's Artistic Creations, mainly to focus on selling my photographic Art, but over the years has grown to include many more media, such as some of the old arts- Swedish weaving, hand tooled leather pieces and much more.
Currently, my husband and I are both retired and loving it!! I am enjoying working with my different art media, teaching and selling my artwork!!! We hope to get to the reunion, but it will all depend on the schedule at the Gallery and if either of us can finally get a 'real' paying job. WE do get back to Sterling area as often as possible to visit Jim's parents /family.
