Loretta's Story
Life
After M&A, I attended Cooper Union, Fordham U. at Lincoln Ctr. and The New School. I rec'd a BFA from Cooper U. in 1977, where I'd majored in painting ('58-'63). I was an apparel and decorative fabric dsgr for over 25 yrs; I taught print dsgn at Parsons and Pratt-Phoenix in the mid-70's. These days I spend much of my time communicating w/ my 1st cousin, Walter Sublette, a poet, novelist, newspaper & magazine book reviewer, and college professor. He lives in Chicago. Since retiring in 1998 (because of illness), I've devoted a lot of hrs. to writing, also. After more than 50 yrs., Walter and I will hook up this summer and take a motor trip through New Mexico.
I have two children, whom I've raised as a single parent. My daughter, Gitiim Chakamoi (class of '82), was a music/percussion major at M&A. Concurrently, she was on scholarship at the Manhattan ...Expand for more
School of Music Prep School, and The Dance Theatre of Harlem School. At DTH, she was a member of the Percussion Ens., and accompanied the Dance Co. on tours. In 1977,Gitiim graduated cum laude from The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist U., in Dallas, TX. After 6 seasons working at the Sante Fe Opera, several years at Houston's Alley Theatre, and a season at Tulsa Opera, Gitiim is presently Houston Grand Opera's Scheduler, as well as, Ass't to the Head of the Music Staff.
My son, Matidi Chakamoi, attended PS 86 in NYC, and finished grade 6, JHS and the Talented & Gifted Magnet HS, in Texas. On a full academic scholarship, he graduated from The College of Business Administration, at the University of Texas at Austin (1990). He's been in mgt. at PEPSICO, since then. Mat's currently working on his MBA in Mgt & Mktg, at the University of Dallas.
