Lori's Story
After UCLA I moved to Hawai'i; it was a great experience even if the wages were low (ha!) I lived there until 1988, when I moved to San Diego.
I went back to school at 30 to get a graphic design degree and have worked in that industry ever since, starting out in publishing then moving into branding and packaging design. Design has been hard-hit in the economy downturn; I have relocated to Houston, TX and am working with a great design firm, even if the city has some of the worst weather in the US and is flatter than, well, you name it. (And don't get me started about the mosquitoes and the cicadas...)
As for other "stuff", I collect old postcards and Art Deco costume jewelry, try ...Expand for more
to read a lot of books, and do Sudoku puzzles to ward off brain stagnation...
And... I am still doing art on my own; in the past 8 years I have moved from oil painting to ceramics. I own a small tile studio that makes Art Deco tile (1920s-1930s style). It's all hand-made and it is hard as hell but I love every minute of it.
I started noticing and truly appreciating the Art Deco style in high school. We have a lot of it in Alameda, most notable is the Alameda Theater. (Probably all those years of sitting in the theater, with my head back looking at the ornate ceiling, as I waited for the movie to start is what did it... ha!) I am thrilled it was restored/renovated a few years ago.
