Lori's Story

Life I have been teaching 6th through 8th grade English, reading, and geography in Southfield since 1991, after earning my bachelors at Siena Heights College. I have since completed my masters at Wayne State and have served as both the English Department Chair and English Department Curriculum Coordinator at work, as well as union representative and secretary for my building and school district. Those of you who knew me might be surprised (or not) to hear that I have coached volleyball and track, advised the school paper, run the student council and honor society, coached many reading competition teams and presented at both state and national educational conferences. Okay, enough of the professional stuff. I live in my beautiful condo in West Bloomfield, and have never married, nor do I have kids. I think I would have liked to have done both, actually, but I think the "kid ship" has sailed. Seeing all of my friends' kids gets that maternal instinct going after awhile I suppose, but I have a great niece that I have loved to spoil. If the right person comes along, I wouldn't rule out marriage, though. My parents just celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary, so maybe I will do the same when I am 112. :) One of my proudest personal accomplishments has been my weight loss of 207 pounds several years ago. I got involved in everything from aerobics and running to golf, and I actively coached volleyball for eight seasons at work. Lately, I've been sidelined due to four back surgeries and five other major surgeries in the past few years, but I'd like to try to pick up some of my previous, more active, loves again at some point. Knock on wood. However, I am realistic, and have had to give up coaching and make some major changes in order to keep life pain free(er). Such is life as we age, right? I would love to hear from anyone from any of my schools--both where I attended and where I taught. It's so hard to believe how old we are! :) Let me know how you are doing, and please let me know some memories you have of us in school. Those are always fun! You can find me on Facebook. For those of you who attended St. Lawrence, and checked out my bio for that reason, I just want to let you know that my mother is Charline Bergeron List (St. Lawrence class of 1960). I would be happy to pass on any messages to her on your behalf. School Come on! If you k...Expand for more
new me, you knew I swooned over Tony Blaisdell, Doug MeGill, Scott Rausch, John White, Rob Diber.. Also, if you knew me, you knew it was Sr. Eileen Rice who was my mentor of all mentors. One of my cats was actually named Sr. Eileen Rice, O.P., Ph. D. and the other was named Siena. I would NEVER go back to school though...truth? School was pretty miserable for me, because I never really felt like I fit in. I always felt like I was just waiting for it to be over so that my life could get started. I do want to thank those folks who were really kind to me and who really treated me well when not everyone did: Richard Tuttle, Jackie Battalora, Jim Matejewski, the incomparable Elizabeth Brinkman Bromund, Suzi Wegner Grant, Rob Diber, Greg Schira, Gaemer Guitierrez, Jan Dubay, the late Jimmy Blaisdell, Jr., Doran Oboza, Jim Lawson, Bernadine Coyle, Mike Giacomantonio, Michelle Hellner McClure, Sheila Dwyer Schwartz, Lisa Lauber Jorgensen, Grant Gordon, Pam Mullaly Kocher, Jenni Rico, Ruthann Schulte, Jean Marie Bryan, and Michael Krane. Workplace I have been teaching 6th, 7th and 8th grade English for 32 years for Southfield Public Schools, and I love it most of the time. I am also a National Writing Project fellow and have done some consulting for Oakland Schools intermediate school district as a professional development facilitator/writer. I have supervised a few student teachers and more interns from colleges and universities than I can count, which is where I have a lot of fun--teaching teachers. Additionally, I have taught summer school a couple of times. I have been named the English Department Chairperson, English Department Curriculum Coordinator, union representative and secretary, and have advised student council for many years.. As I mentioned previously, I coached track and also coached volleyball for 8 seasons, as well as pioneered a Language Arts Club. I coordinated after school Title I remediation programs and developed an after-school gifted and talented program, as well. I coached many Battle of the Books competitive reading quiz teams and took on the new role of advising our school's chapter of the National Junior Beta Club honor society. My most recent extra-curricular endeavor was creating a quiz bowl program, which is an academic competition. All in all, I am happy with my career and don't see it changing any time soon. Well, maybe slowing down... :)
