Lori's Story

I've been on an amazing journey since high school. After college I traveled quite a bit, was a race coach for a ski team during the day and bartended at night. It was definitely the single lifestyle and I enjoyed every minute of it. I met my husband John in 1988. He was a wonderful guy who loved to cook, have fun, work hard and truly made me into the person I am today. We had 2 great kids, Marcus and Montana. John was a firefighter and I was a stay at home mom until he was killed in the line of duty on March 10, 2005 when his helicopter went down while on a fire in Texas. So now it's just the kids, the cats and I living in the mountains and starting a new life. I now work for the Forest Service part-time in Human Resources and spend the rest of it working for a non-profit organization that helps out wildland firefighter's families. I spend alot of time traveling around the country speaking to groups of firefighters and their wives teaching them how to be prepared to survive if a fatality should occur and educating them on benefits that are available to them. I have ...Expand for more
also been involved getting legislation through on both the state and national level to help firefighter's families receive benefits that have been denied to them. I just recently completed a class on dispatching and have started doing fire assignments on any fires that I am sent to. With the fire season that we are having right now (the summer of 08), I am working way more than I thought possible!! I am gone generally for 2 weeks at a time - 14 days straight with most days being 12+ hours. I am also attending a LAST training session in Maryland in July. This will put me on a strike team that is dispatched whenever a fatality occurs in the wildland community throughout the nation. I plan on doing alot more traveling with the kids. They sometimes complain about being dragged off to another airport to go on another trip, but they always end up loving everywhere we go. Our next trip will be in April of 2008 to Kauai where we will celebrate Marcus' 18th birthday. Not much else to say right now. Drop a line if you feel compelled! I'd love to hear from an old Mustang!! ;-)
