Lorna's Story
Where to begin? Left Utah after a failed childless marriage. Moved to Colorado and did some graduate work at the School of MInes. Got a good job offer so said goodbye to the the School of MInes and went out into the oilpatch as an Oil Chemist. We did secondary recovery (yes, frack jobs in the 80s), I then moved on to exploration. Dresser Magcobar in Houston as a Drilling Fluids Engineer-transfered to North Dakota - I know what 30F below feels like. Laid off when oil went from $50 to $15/barrel. Remarried. Moved on to Spreckels Sugar Factory (a lot like an oil refinery-hence I got the job) in Mendota-lived in Fresno. Moved to Southern California and joined Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu-worked with the crystal group-Maiman's old group - that invented the laser. Got a cool patent for CO2 lasers. ged departments and worked on GaAs and InP III-V and II-VI semiconductors. Moved on to Morton Thiokol in Tustin CA as a Scientist for photoresists. Relocated to New Jersey-hated it there cuz I had to travel so much-all over the world. Had 2 girls and said enough travelling. Worked for Olin Hunt in Phoenix then Silicon Systems in Tustin, then Applications Engineering Manager at Ultatech Stepper.(Working out of my home and commuting to San Jose). Then off to Oregon-divorce-and one last treck to Texas Instruments in Dallas. Left TI for California (Hughes again) then on to North Carolina -(See pic of my house) and eventually - yes you aren't gonna believe it I am back in Utah in Orem at a Japanese firm making wire grid polarizers (for 3D). Two wonderful girls-one at the U and one at home. Windering where the time went, and why no one ever told me about a reunion???
