Lorraine Gornick:

CLASS OF 1975
Chicago, IL

Lorraine's Story

Life Sure have covered a lot of ground since 1975 ... Started out as a substitute teacher in the Chicago Public schools, Music Ed. BA., while gigging around town as a semi-pro trumpet player. Major teacher layoffs hit in '79-80. Got a BGS in CPSC and shifted gears to a more predictable income as a computer programmer for Sears in '84. Worked my way up the corporate ladder to establish the project office for the Year 2000/Y2K effort in '95 and dedicated 5 years of my life to "saving the world" from system failures due to the arrival of 01/01/00. Did a lot of traveling and speaking engagements with the National Retail Federation Survival 2000 Committee. After almost 16 years at Sears HQ, and an MBA in MIS, ventured off as an independent consultant (Strategy Alliance) to various small businesses helping them improve efficiency and automate business administrative processes. At the same time, worked on a Culinary Arts Assoc. degree, a 360 back to my line cooking and banquet serving days in ...Expand for more
Hammond while in high school! These days I am managing the accounting function for the partners of a new Convention and Banquet facility. I love talking to the executive chef about recipes and cooking techniques while hinting that he might pursue better case pricing on sweet red peppers. The trumpets are buried in the closet, but my file of choral music has outgrown my file cabinets. Volunteer choral singing and fund raising has offered wonderful opportunities to travel, even more than band did in high school: Europe, Canada and Australia. Singing in many of the infamous cathedrals of Europe and the Sydney Opera House has been a great experience. Oh, needless to say, having so much fun making money and pursuing my interests, I'm not married, no kids... never met anyone that could keep up with me, or more likely too busy to recognize opportunities. No regrets though, except that it has recently become apparent I will not have any grand-children! Time sure does fly when you're having fun.
