Louis's Story
Being an indifferent student with far too many numerous absences, I barely managed to graduate on time with the Class of 57 by taking an extra class (early and late) every semester with a D minus average. Immediately after graduating, my Army enlistment began with assignments with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions, and a tour in Germany. That tour was interrupted by a serious accident requiring six months in the hospital ending at the Presidio in San Francisco. Apparently the Army not pleased with the circumstances of the accident, reassigned me far across the country to Fort Devens, Massachusetts. A year before my discharge, I married a wonderful young woman from the Bronx, New York. When discharged in 1962 after five years of service, we moved to the Bronx, NY where I took a job delivering bread to retail stores. That lasted for five years and we then moved, with our three children to Orange County, NY which is about 60 miles from New York City. There I started a janitor business again lasting for five years. My wife and I then started and operated a hobby ceramic business. That venture ended when my wife was injured suffering 2nd and 3rd degree burn to 50% of her body. In 1974, medic...Expand for more
al bills wiping us out financially, we then headed west to Phoenix, Arizona for a fresh start. There I was able to resume abandoned attempts at college and returned to school full time in August of 1974 funded by the GI Bill, part time work, financial assistance, and student loans. With about a half year of college already completed in NY, I finished undergraduate studies at Arizona State University and graduated from ASU Law School in December of 1978 adding another child while in law school. Finally, I was able to persuade my wife to move to Sacramento - a place I always loved and yearned to return to. After passing the California bar, I served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Sacramento for 10 years then began my own private practice in 1990. I now practice law part time. When my mother died at 97, we moved to the family home (the house is same age as the Class of 57) where I grew up and lived when I was at Sac Hi. Unfortunately after 54 years of a wonderful years of marriage, in 2015 my wife died of a heart attack. I now take comfort with my 4 children, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grand children.
. My brothers George, and Pete, and Bessie also attended Sac Hi. All are deceased..
