Luis's Story

Life After graduating OHS, I hitched across country, lived in Brockton, Mass for 6 months, bought a motorcycle and rode it back. Attended College of Alameda, Merritt College, CSU Hayward for a couple semesters, married a Canadian, moved to Vancouver, Canada, graduated from Simon Fraser University with a computing science degree, worked at BC Hydro for 20+ years until my unit was privatized by Accenture. Got divorced, a succession of relationships, an MBA and a CMA, downsized out of Accenture and collected salary continuance for a couple of years before moving into my final job as a tax auditor for the provincial government. I am currently retired and loving it! Meanwhile, I became a bicycle racer in the early 70's, specializing in track events. Bronze in points race in 2002 Masters World Track Championships in Manchester, silver in points race in 1998 World Masters Games in Portland, a whole bunch of silvers, both road and track, at 2005 World Masters Games in Portland. One Canadian national championship, lots of 2nd's. Won my age group at the Huntsman World Seniors Games in 2005, the last significant win of my amateur career. Lately I've been riding my fixed gear bike, on the road and in the indoor 200-meter Burnaby velodrome. I've also been doing lots of long rides. I rode Paris-Brest-Paris in 2011, something I had missed doing since 1979, and rode it again in 2015. I completed three rides for the California Triple Crown in 2012, all on the fixed gear. In 2013, I rode the 1,400 km London-Edinburgh-London ride in five days, repeating the ride on a new geared bike in 2017, and I completed the Trona 353 in 2013, ...Expand for more
the Hoodoo 500 in 2014 (setting a fixed-gear record), and the Silver State 508 in 2015. In 2016, I rode three 1200-km "grand" randonnees: the Rocky Mountain 1200 in Canada, the Cascade 1200 in Washington, and the Cracker Swamp 1200 in central Florida. I also rode the Northern Nova Scotia 1000 and finally got to see that part of Canada (parts of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island as well). I think I overdid it in 2017, riding three 1200-km grand randonnees (Gold Rush in California, Granite Anvil in Ontario, Canada, and Taste of Carolina in North Carolina, in addition to the 1400-km LEL (above), and a 1000-km ride between Mount Vernon, WA and Whitefish, MT. By the end of the year, I had been diagnosed with "atrial flutter," and had two ablations. It appears to be fixed now, although I'm remaining on blood thinner, and I'm still riding my bike! I guess I'm slowly getting older, but I'm fighting back. I also attend a lot of operas (my other great passion), with season tickets to Vancouver and Seattle and lots of trips to operas worldwide. Several trips to Covent Garden, also to Santa Fe in 2003 with a ride partner, and to Glimmerglass (near Cooperstown NY) in 2008) with my tandem partner. I was also in NYC in 2012 to see Robert Lepage's Wagner's Ring Cycle and three other operas at the Met. In 2013 I was in Rome to see Wagner's Rienzi at the Teatro dell'Opera, and at Glyndebourne to see Michael Grandage's production of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro. I also got married again in 2013 to Carole. We're spending the winter months at her place in Folsom, CA and our summers in British Columbia at my townhouse in Burnaby.
