Joseph's Story
Life
I attended Hollywood Professional School from 1952-1953. The kids I knew there were Leroy Lambert, Jon Sonday, Daria Massey, and Diane DuBois. Leroy was the science whiz, Jon left to live in London after college, Daria had a neat 1953 Studebaker in Coral, and Diane was on her way back to Paris. Mariam Deutsch was a very nice and sweet person. Same for Dorothy Sutherland. Ed Abroms was cool in his 1939 Ford (hot rod) Sedan. Much to Mrs. Mann's chagrin, some of the kids hung out at the Dog Shack (?) next door after school with its loud rock & roll jukebox. That was before the "Days of the Fonz."
Me, I got a job after graduation to work at an aircraft plant: North American Aviation. But my life improve after that. One of my hobbies was racing motorcycles. In 1957, I raced motorcycles at Southern California drag strips. I was the 500cc class World Champion in 1957. Listed in The Society of Land Speed Racing Historians, 2014.
After leaving HPS, I attended Westlake College of Modern Jazz, UCLA, College of the Desert, Claremont College
and UC, Riverside.
I married Louise Reyes who attended Citrus High School, El Camino College, UC Riverside and UCLA. We have been married 56 years. Louise and I continue to take fun classes at UCLA.

s Verdes, California. Both are UCLA graduates. Louise and I had an interesting
life working in aerospace.
I have worked at Von Karman Research Center, Rocketdyne, and TRW Space & Defense, on solid, liquid, gelled, hybrid, gaseous rocket propellants, chemical lasers, and other interesting projects.
Hobbies that Louise and I have shared include restoring vintage automobiles, traveling, archaeology, Los Angeles architecture, philately, hiking, camping & fishing.
In 1992, Louise and I retired in Palm Springs where we made interesting friends.
We returned to the general Los Angeles area in 2000 to restore a 1929 Spanish Colonial Revival home, where we currently live.
But in 2007, I returned to work on planetary and interplanetary spacecraft at the NASA Space Center/ JPL managed by the California institute of Technology, in Pasadena. My three-year contract ended in 2009, when I was 74. Most of my work at NASA was on the Mars Science Laboratory including the Curiosity Rover which landed on Mars on August 6, 2012. I am a rocket scientist by profession.
My only HPS reunion attendance was a few years ago. The Class of '53 has fewer than 8 survivors, I was told. Perhaps as few as 5.
