Lovell's Story
Life
I have lived in Houston, Texas for over 37 years. In 2005, the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center created the first Department of Health Disparities Research in the country. where I was Professor of Health Disparities Research, and Director of the 1st Congressionally Mandated Center for Research on Minority Health until I retired in August 2013. I also served as Director of the graduate program in Reproductive Biology at the University of Texas Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences until that time. M I have been married to Marion Samuel for over 40 years with two children, Troy and Tamisha. Both graduated from UC Berkeley with degrees in Engineering. Tamisha finished her residency in Pediatrics from Baylor College of Medicine and is practicing in Houston and now Associate Director of Pediatrics at Legacy Health. She also delivered our third grandchild Cass who joins her brothers Cole and Tate. Son Troy is a project manager for a large business software firm and is married to Taylor Tran. Marion is now retired, but volunteers at Cole's school.
When I retired, I became one of the few individuals in the nation with emeritus status at two Universities, the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
School
I often wonder about these years and the people I met along with way. I finished elementary school at McKinley Elementary. This school no longer exist. I transferred to Southern University Lab School in 1960. The school is still on Southern University's campus. I transferred in 1964 and finished from Robert E. Lee High School, being one of the first African Americans to integrate schools in Baton Rouge. I have been told it too has been closed.
College

sity at Hayward, now Cal-State University East Bay. Was originally accepted into the graduate program at UCLA, but elected to complete my graduate program in endocrinology and tumor biology at the University of California, Berkeley. I then did a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California San Francisco. I was then appointed to the faculty at UCSF.
Workplace
My first real job was at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories. I had the honor of working for two Nobel Lauretes (Drs. George Trilling and Luis Alvarez) whose encouragement led to my going to graduate school. I worked as a teaching assistant for Dr. Dan Mazia and Dr. Howard A. Bern, two men who have had a profound impact on my life. Dr. Bern, a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), also served as my predoctoral mentor. After graduating, I served as a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow under the sponsorship of Dr. Pentti Siiteri. During my postdoctoral fellowship I was hired by the University of California San Francisco as an Instructor, my first academic position. From there I went to the University of Texas M.D Anderson Cancer Center, where I rose to the rank of Full Professor. The first African American to reach that rank at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer. In 2000, I was appointed as the Director of the first Congressionally Mandated center focused on minority health and health disparities outside of the federal government. In 2007, I was elected to the University of Texas Academy of Health Education.
On August 31, 2013, I retired from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and became Professor Emeritus. The first African American to have that title bestowed. I subsequent became an Emeritus Professor at the University of Texas Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences, the first African American to bestowed a second honor of Emeritus in the UT System.
