Fran 's Story
At this writing I am coming up on my 73birthday and awaiting the publication of my book of artwork over 100 pieces for this current edition. This follows on the heels of two difficult years of grief and loss. Two years ago my oldest child died of pharmaceutical complications relative to Epilepsy she had struggled with since age 16. My 36 year old son with Down's syndrome moved into independent living with an assisted living room-mate, my husband moved into an extendicare facility for medical reasons and my beloved father passed away at the age of 96. So I find myself coming to terms with living alone for the first time in my life which, coming from a family of five children, is an interesting time. Husband Bob and I ran an Environmental engineering business together until he retired at age 70 ten years ago. Prior to that in the 70's, I worked as an engineering designer doing water and sewer design for new subdivisions in the Edmonton area where we lived for ten years. to Julian, art and advocacy. Calgary is now home for 32 years in the little area know as Wildwood. Life has been about advocacy for people with Down's Syndrome for the past 36 years ensuring that the concept of "inclusion" is carried out wherever and whenever necessary for persons with disabilities. I also taught Art for two years at elementary school in Brockville and then in Calgary supported the Home Schooling programme teaching art for home schooling moms in their homes for their children. In the mid eighties after taking a music improv class, I put together a tape of my own musical compositions which was well received though no longer available. I have two grandchildren in their early teens living with their parents, my middle son and his wife in Edmonton. Kind sweet kids!
I am a passionate gardener and follow a daily regular meditation path since 45 years which helps to keep me intact through the challenges life brings. I am blessed to have terrific friends and neighbours. My school years at MWHS are remembered as some of the happiest years of my life, great teachers and fellow students. If you are reading this, then I thank you for being part of these happy memories.
