Sandra's Story

After graduating from Emerson I earned a BA from Indiana followed by a Teaching Certificate and a MA in Speech and Language Pathology. While at IU I met my husband. We met in September and got married in April. We moved to British Columbia and he took a position on the faculty at UBC. I worked as a Speech and Language Pathologist for Vancouver Schools and later for public health. After about four years we quit our jobs and bought 80 acres of bush land on Northern Vancouver Island. ls. We lived for 11 years with no electricity and cooked and heated with wood. At least weekly we had close encounters with bears, wolves and cougars. I commuted 50 miles to work and established a speech and language program in the schools. In 1976 our daughter arrived and when she was in grade 1 we sold the farm and bought a house in town. It was just too dangerous for her on the farm. The RCMP even told me to carry a gun whenever she was playing outside. We are now Canadian citizens and I love living here! I retired in 2000 and now we enjoy retirement. Our main interest is cruising and we never seem to tire of travel! Our daughter, her husband and my little granddaughter live just down the street from us.
