Luora's Story

Since 1961 (graduation from ACHS), I attended a Business School in Nashville, TN (at the bequest of my father), married Orva Robinson (Lucky) in 1964, had a daugter in 1965 , divorced him in 1966 and moved back with my mother and father in Spring Lake. Employed as a secretary with Attorneys Lane and George; secretary for the Dean of the College at then Fayetteville State College; took the Civl Service Exam and went to work as a Secretary at Fort Bragg (1968); met and married SSG Arthur Harvey in 1969; had a daugther in 1974. My daughters are very successful. My oldest daughter (Lisa Donnelle Robinson-Clark) attended Westover High School, graduated in 1982, attended UNC-CH majoring in Journalism, could not find emloyment in her field, joined the Air Force, married, has 2 children (1 daughter-20; 1 son-18), will retire in June 2012 with 26 years of creditable service. My youngest daughter (Joan Nicole Harvey-Lewis), on Facebook, attended Westover High School, graduated in 1992, married, has 2 children (2 daughters-15&6), employed as a Manager in Assured Claims, with BCBS. Everybody says Nicole is a replica of me in that she believes and knows that 1 can be a majority. She does not follow very well, she is a definite leader, and "CAN'T" is a word that she neither uses nor allows her daughters to use (the same as I was). My father taught me & Macy McRae,Jr that the word "can't" was nothing but an EXCUSE and never a reason for not achieving. I believed it then and I believe it now. Lisa, my oldest, is sort of passive (she got that from my mother, certainly not from her father nor me), academically inclined, kind, supportive and and an over-achiever. Nicole is a way-maker, never, never gives up, very likeable, a socializer, believes that the 'EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM'. I retired from Civil Servce in 1993 after 25 years, at age 50, as a Supervisory General Supply Specialist, GS-11; realized that retirement was not meant for me; went to work at the Cumberland County Mental Health Department (1996-2000) as a Medical Processing Clerk (1996-1999), promoted to a supervisor in January 2000, found that non-Civil Service employees were less disciplined; resigned in May 2000; went to work part-time as a Data Entry Operator at Sycamore Square, US Postal Service 2000-2007; retired for the 2d time in May 2007. I go on a 7-day cruise every 2 years, travel to see my daughters and their families; enrolled at Fayetteville Tech...Expand for more
nical Community College, in the Medical Office Administration Program with the intentions of transferring to a 4-yr college/university. My reasons for doing this is because I have a Primary Care doctor and a Cardiologist and in both instances, I get t my appointments and realize that the Office Manager has her employees to schedule up to 5 patients for the same doctor and at the same time. To me this is ridiculous because my time is just as important as my doctor, especially since he is getting well paid. My cardiologist informed me that if I would get certified in that area, then he would hie me part-time as a consultant and let his Office Mgr know that I worked directly for him. He certainly was well aware that the two of us would be conflictual with each other and that could be diastrous because he is aware that I don't like to lose at anything, not even horseshoes. My second husband and I separated in 1996, and then divorced in May 2008 after 38 1/2 years of marriage. We realized that if he had not been in th 82d Airborne Division and was always away from home, then we probably would have divorced much earlier. We both are "take charge" people and someone had to be passive and compromise. He retired as a Command Sergeant Major (E-9) with a huge ego, and in my case, I couldn't seem to find a passive bone in my entire body; so we had to let go of the marriage. We remain friends because we have grandchildren from my prior marriage, his prior marriage, and our marriage. My thing is this: "Life is too short to be unhappy, hold grudges, and place blame." I don't believe that the Lord made me for me to judge anyone. I thank the Lord each and every morning, throughout the day,and at night for the many blessings He has bestowed upon me. I intend to remain in His favor. For the time-being, I am content being single, taking care of myself, enjoying my children and grandchildren, attending church, going to classes at FTCC, and making decisions for myself. My family (The Evander Lucas/Arthur Monroe, Sr), for the most part, remains in Spring Lake. My younger brothers who attended Pine Forest High School are in Maryland, and Arthur Jr, (Class of 1962) died in 2005. Macy McRae, Jr, my special first cousin, died recently. Life goes on and I truly believe that the Lord does not put more on me than I can bear. Life has been good to me and I am truly grateful for His blessings. Wish me luck in my future endeavors.
