Lynda's Story
Life
Surely you remember the little Southern girl who came to Romulus only in our senior year. I was married to a soldier at 16. Since he was stationed there at the Air National Guard Base with the Nike Missle Defense System, I enrolled at Romulus to complete my senior year. That was so long ago, I can't remember a lot. I do know you accepted me and helped me adjust to being so far from home with no family support. I was a member of the National Honor Society and worked in the library. My last name was and is Best (we'll soon be married 50 years, oh lord!), but I had to use my maiden name of Copes while attending high school there. My diploma lists me as Lynda Copes Best (at my request).
At present, I am a retired high school teacher of art, English, and Business Education. My husband, Allen, and I run two rural water businesses out of a home office. Though we are both retired from our regular jobs, we work full time with these water systems. If ...Expand for more
you need to know anything about water, just ask him: he knows it all, it seems. I am the System Clerk and take care of all the paper work.
I'd rather be painting, though. I did for some time before I began teaching in 1989. (I did not complete my college degree until then. Got my Masters at age 50, can you believe, then 30 more hours for an additional raise in pay. Art was my passion, though,
and I grieve every day because I don't get into it again. But, somehow I always seem to need the money of these extra jobs, which keep me so busy.
I mostly paint ducks, cypress trees, and bayous; but I also paint flowers, landscapes, and even some nonrepresentational and abstracts. Such fun.
We had two children, a daughter 47, and a son 38--who was killed two months ago in a motorcycle accident. Thank God he had two sons. The daughter has a boy and a girl--she is on TDY in Guam and is stationed right here in LA at Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport.
