Lynda's Story

Seeing all the familiar names of folks from those good old school days... When I think of Ahuntsic School, I remember hanging around with Lorraine Miles, Peter (aka "Bubblegum Pete"), the twins - Ronnie and Ricky Bee, and Patricia (sorry can't remember her last name). I recall my dear friends Diane Mayeda (and family) and of course Cheryl Tabata, Peter Morritt, and the great fun we had at Mary Papaconstantinos' birthday parties - always a special treat! Those were the days of watching kids get their tongues frozen on that horrid metal fence (who me? not! lol), heading to the local hang-out to play pinball after school (and hoping the parents didn't show up!), school dances, fish net stockings and mini skirts! The teacher I remember most is Mrs. Zamborsky (always standing in the hallway with her yardstick) and of course, the special music classes when Mr. Elvin (from the Montreal Symphony Orchestra) came in and taught some of us how to play stringed instruments (mine was the violin and my brother's was the cello). I remember the first year at Malcom Campbell, but then we abruptly moved to Toronto in December 1967, so my time with my dear friends from Ahuntsic and my new friends from Malcolm Campbell became memories of the past. But I do remember singing with the choir at Expo '67, the great music classes we had (I'll always remember the Circle of 5ths! lol), and more importantly how much bigger the MC community was when compared to our days at Ahuntsic. My new life in Toronto was quite the shock from our uniformed and disciplined days of Malcolm Campbell. Unifor...Expand for more
ms weren't the norm, blue jeans and leather jackets were (needless to say, with a family of 6 kids, we couldn't afford much of that). My memories are of Mr. Pickles, Mr. Clark (and his co-worker, soon-to-be wife), our great music classes where I learned how to play the ukelele with Aja Christiansen. Then off we went down the street to high school: C.W. Jefferys! And that is where the fun began. My "best bud" Barry, great friendships with a host of people, friday night skating parties, hanging out at the mall after school, and of course the freedom of writing our own notes when we didn't feel like going to class (it was during our tenure that 18 became the "legal age"). There were the parties, the trips to the bars, the daily meets in the cafeteria to talk about the latest hockey game (I learned all about hockey so that I could understand what Chuck and the guys were talking about! lol), and it was in the cafeteria, where another group of dear friends (who will of course remain nameless) decided to show me what "real drugs" looked like! Yes, all a part of growing up in the big city of Toronto! And now I'm settled in Calgary, with my adult son of 33, enjoying a rewarding career in the oil and gas industry and a rich life full of my favourite interests and hobbies (volunteering, teaching, travel, music and fly-fishing) and looking for what's next as I turn the corner! Thanks for sharing my trip down memory lane - I hope it brought back fond memories for you as it did for me. May you be richly blessed by the memories of yesterday and the gift of today! ...Lynda
