Lynn's Story

Occupation: Retired after 35 years of Graphic Design and Illustration. Post Retirement: Art Instructor and Professional Artist After graduation I entered Merced College and graduated in Fine Arts and Architectural drafting in 1968. My husband and I married that year and he continued his education at Central Washington University with a masters in psychology and Utah State University with a Doctorate in Special Education. We lived in Logan, Utah during those years and had our daughter Tara and our son Brett. I continued my education toward my Bachelors but it was a slow process. A couple of classes here and there. I kept busy with church, community and kids activities. They were good years but it wasn't meant to be. I moved back to California with the kids and worked for a year. At that time my husband and I reconciled. He got a teaching position at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington and we moved in 1976. The marriage didn't survive and I stayed in Bellingham to help raise the kids and finish my education. I graduated from WWU 3 years later with a Specialty degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. I worked for another 17 years in Graphic Design and in that time opened a small graphic design firm for 4 1/2 years. At that time (1996) my Mom was diagnosed with cancer and I put the business on hold and moved down to California, (Chester/Lake Almanor area). I stayed for a year until mom was stable. I then move back to take care of home, business and family. Thankfully my artistic ability has always afforded me an adequate income and it kept me going through the moving back and forth and family turmoil. In 1998 Mom died and 7 months later Dad died in 1999. It took me a few years to get back on track and when I did I had lost all interest in continuing in design. I decided to pursue my own painting and fine art endeavors and art instruction. I have been retired for a few years now and I still work teaching art in my home or wherever it takes me. I am involved in community activities and I also help raise my great-granddaughter Leeah (2 1/2) and I'm loving it!! I believe I am living the best part of my life. Exciting points in my life. ent time at Filmore West in SF in 1968. Saw Jefferson Airplane, OC Smith and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Did a bit of psychedelic chalk drawing under the black lights. Ate free crackers, pickles and apples out of open barrels sitting in the foyer as you walked in the auditorium. How things have changed. Today each cracker, pickle and apple would be shrink wrapped and cost us at least $10 to $20 each. Bought and sold 2 homes by myself. No Real Estate help. I was amazed at myself. Taking 16 teenagers into the Salmon Le Sac forest to camp for a week-end with "one" girlfriend. Oui! Horse packing into the Washington state wilderness Rafting the Wenatchee River Flying in a glider Going on a Mothers Day outing into the San Juan Islands on a friend's tug boat with 10 other mothers and kids. We sheltered in a bay on the west side of Orcas Island and played for the day. Incredible. Did some skydiving and became a little too addicted to the adrenalin rush. I made 4 single jumps and loved it!!! Hard to explain the feeling. I love being in the air. Hiked to the top of a fire look-out mountain, sat down and thought I'd reached heaven for sure. Beautiful view!! My daughter has 2 beautiful daughters, Annie and Jade. Annie has a beautiful daughter, Leeah and a handsome son, Matthew. Took a trip on a 2 masted, gaff-rigged schooner the Adventuress. She was launched off the coast of Maine in 1913 and has a long colorful history. Check her history on Google. I was able to sail on her in 1993 when she lead the tall ships on a trip from Victoria BC to Tacoma harbor for the 4th of July fireworks in the harbor. When you sail on her you are automatically a crew member and you're given a job. What ever job that is, it becomes your new name. I helped pull the "Perils of Pauline" up the mast so the sails would come up. My name was Pauline for the rest of the trip. It was an eerie feeling to be on the ship when the sun went down and it became very quiet and you could hear the lapping of the water against the side of the ship. Then the sea shanty's started very quietly at first and then built up to a boisterous noise. It was as if we'd gone back a hundred years in time. The fire works were a lot more special that year. It would be great to hear from any of you. I'd like to see how you are doing and how life is going. OOXX

Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie is what I have on my mind this week. As soon as next week comes I'll go
