Lynn's Story

Spent first 3 years of high school in Plainview, Texas. Then my father got a job as a flight instructor/charter pilot at Desert Airways at the Alamo airport. He got me on there too and I worked all my senior year there getting paid just in flying time. I got my private pilot's license the day of our senior prom. My dad issued my license as a newly ordained FAA Examiner. My license was the first he issued. Since we were agents for rental cars, I did get paid 5 bucks when we needed to return a car to El Paso that had been turned in to us. I would get a free ride back on one of our air taxi flights. If there were no passengers, I even got to fly (no commercial license). Somehow, I got to go wash a brand new Mustang rental car on the night of the prom. Somehow, I didn't get it back until 6pm Sunday!! My first year of college I attended Milton College in Wisconsin then I returned to Alamo and went to ACC until I got drafted. Did a tour in Viet Nam as a radio-teletypewriter team chief (Sgt E-5). Stationed at Camp Carroll (Charlie Two) right on the DMZ, Quang Tri, and also Khe Sanh. Took my R&R to Sydney. Returned to Albuquerque (family there) afterwards and started back in school. I was convinced by an architect who was teaching my drafting class to apply to attend Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. I took a portfolio out and was told I needed to have ALL my basic college classes completed before I could enter as they only taught design classes. The equivalent of 4 years of design classes. I got the credits I needed at UNM and then got my portfolio accepted and started in the Car Design program (Transportation Design, actually, part of the Industrial Design dept.). After my first semester, I was awarded a scholarship from Ford and later got one from Chrysler Corp too. Starting...Expand for more
with our 5th semesters, we were required to put on a suit and present (a speech) our designs and clay models to our classmates, our instructors, actual designers and engineers from Detroit, and even the school's Dean. They did not give us ANY public speaking training in spite of the requirement and I panicked and didn't show at all. Did the same for the rest of the program 4 more trimesters. Did not get my bachelors, consequently, and had to settle for a career in aerospace, dang. Returned to Alb and did some illustration work for Sandia Labs and one week at Los Alamos then spent 2 years in Odessa, TX then a year working for an untralight aircraft mfg in Duncanville (Dallas). After that, I spent 18 years with Tracor Aerospace in Austin as an illustrator then mechanical designer. They were bought out by BAE Systems and in 2003, I was laid off along with 80 of the other "white above the temple" crowd. I then took a contract position with another aerospace company in Boulder, CO. I have worked for them off and on 5 different times since including my last 2 1/2 year contract that ended in Dec. Back in '06, I couldn't find work in Denver and took a one-year contract with Orbital Sciences back in Virginia. I did design work (using Pro-E) on two NASA satellites, AIM and IBEX. For the IBEX, I got to design the main stucture that mounts all the instruments which is called the "bus". It was made of aluminum and carbon fiber skins with Nomex honeycomb cores. When I returned to Colorado, I got another 1 year contract with another aerospace company where I designed parts for a space-borne laser system. Fun stuff. Currently looking for work and working on a bicycle project I hope to bring to market one day. Update: back to work in Boulder... 7th time back. Ah, the vagaries of contract work...
