After graduation from NDHS in Jan. '56, I took a couple of extra classes there so my start in college would be in Sep. '56. That fall I began undergrad studies at Duke Univ. in Durham, NC and spent the next 4 yrs completing my bachelor's degree. My first paid job after Duke was as youth director for a church in Gainesville for about 7 months. Then I joined the Navy and spent the next 2 yrs sailing the Pacific Ocean and visiting foreign ports. My next big step was marrying a Dallas schoolteacher and going to work in her hometown of Nacogdoches. Our first born of 3 sons was born there and I got my Master's Degree at Stephen F. Austin State while working as a caseworker in the Child Protective Services division of the State Dept. of Public Welfare. Our family expanded with the births of 2 more sons while I was an instructor/ assistant professor of sociology at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. In 1968, I came to Texas A & M University to teach, do research, and ultimately work for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service for the next 27 years.
