Lynn's Story

I was married in 1971 to a wonderful man who gave me 2 beautiful children. His job took us first to Iowa and then in 1988 to Kansas City. My children have grown and married and I now have a grandson and great grandson. In order to learn our way around the city and to meet new people, Jerry and I took up square dancing. We never did anything just halfway so within 2 years we were officers in our club, a year later we joined the Heart of America Federation Staff and then in 1996, I went to caller school. When my husband passed away in 1999, I really dove into my square dance activity. I have called in several different states and teach lessons to at least 1 class a year and often more. Square dancers are like an extended family and I have met wonderful people from literally all over the world through this activity. In the spring of 2014 I was honored to be named "Caller of the Year" and became a member of the Heart of America Federation Caller/Cuer Hall of Fame. It's an honor I never expected and will always treasure. This is not an activity for old people, it's an activity that keeps you young so you can do it when you get old. We use all different kinds of music and there are people...Expand for more
of all ages involved. If you've never tried it - or only tried it in school - you should give it a try. It's not the same as the old hoedown you might remember. Modern Western Square Dance has evolved into an activity to keep you active mentally and physically and you won't even realize you're exercising. I am now retired from my "real" job and spend most of my time either dancing, calling or teaching. When I'm not square dancing, I'm probably spending time with my family. If I'm not doing one of those 2 things, you will probably find me curled up with a good romance novel. I don't watch a lot of television but I do like Castle and NCIS (the original version) and I'm addicted to Dancing With the Stars. In my spare time, you might find me reconnecting with old friends on facebook, but I'm too old fashioned to "tweet". Being retired allows me a little time to travel. In the winter, I spend several weeks in the Rio Grande Valley in Southern Texas. It is the Square Dance capitol of the world from November to March. I've taken several cruises and plan to be in Cancun next winter. I hope to do some other traveling, as well, maybe to the north east next year. Keep your fingers crossed..
