Lynn's Story

Life After graduating from Western with a degree in journalism in 1981, I began a career in newspapers that lasted 20 years, with some time off to travel (about seven months in England and Europe in 1984--kinda like that movie "If it's Tuesday, this Must be Belgium"). Met my husband, Larry Stetson, in 1991. He's a Virginian, graduating from Virginia Military Institute. His two beautiful daughters, Tiffany (1977) and Lindsay (1980) and their husbands, T.J. and Stephan, make for a wonderful family. Tiff and T.J. also have given us the smartest, most beautiful granddaughter in the world, Ashleigh (2001) (I could be a little biased). In 2001, I happily left newspapers to join World Vision, where I write grants and proposals/reports to major donors, and other supporting materials used by our fundraising and church partnership staff. These funds are used to fight poverty and injustice, and build a better world for children in the name of Christ around the world. Larry was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the bone marrow, in 2002. At first, things weren't going well. g thanks for this gift of new life here on earth was to say "yes" when a step-niece asked us to take in her three sons (then ages 18 months, and 4 years--twins) when they'd been taken by the state because of her inability to safely care for them. These precious boys were a challenge and a joy. Since we knew we may not have "forever" to give them, and they need "forever" families, we weren't an option to adopt them. But we did the best we could to help them heal from the abuse and neglect they suffered so they could start a new life with a loving, caring family. A word of advice: When you pray to God to expand your territory, be prepared for big things. (Update) The boys were adopted by the most incredible families, and continue to do well and thrive. We are thankful we can remain a part of their lives. We enjoy our friends and life at Mason United Methodist Church, where we are active in some of the hands-on ministries there (food bank, Paint Tacoma Beautiful, various committees). (Update) At the end of 2009, I was diagnosed with Stage Two-B breast cancer, and had a mastectomy, chemo, and radiation in 2010. I missed work due to the surgery, but was able to continue working throughout chemo and radiation. So far, so good.
