Lynn's Story
I have worked for 34 years as a speech and language therapist, concentrating on the deaf and hard of hearing population. Thirty of those years were with the Capital Region BOCES. In the spring of 2012, they offered an incentive that I couldn't pass up, so I RETIRED!! Retirement is a challenge! I am working part time at our local Y teaching classes called willPower and Grace, HIIT, Tabata, Body Sculpt as well as subbing Silver Sneakers. I also sub for BOCES within the DHH strand, as it is difficult to get people who know sign language as well as have covered several medical leaves, vacancies, and maternity leaves in and around the capital district. So I am trying to keep busy and figure out this retirement thing! Sometimes I don't feel productive, and I don't like that.
My husband, Todd, retired from teaching special education at the same time. He is keeping busy subbing and tutoring during the winter now, but will be on the golf links as soon as he possibly can! He has had some health issues, but is doing well at the moment and we...Expand for more
are thankful for that and for the opportunity to work OR NOT as we choose!
We have a daughter, Jillian, who will be turning 29 in January. She graduated from college In 2012 and since teaching jobs just weren't to be found around here, she accepted a position as a MS and HS Health and Phys. Ed. teacher at an international school in Quito, Ecuador. She was there for two years. Todd and I visited for two weeks and took a side trip to the Galápagos Islands! Jillian has that gypsy wild child in her blood and since Ecuador has lived several places including Idaho and working over the border into a diff time zone, in Montana. Her latest stint was 6 months in Costa Rica where she earned a certification to teach English. We visited for a month last winter! Now she has landed a real job in Mass. teaching physical education in a public HS. Hopefully she will see the advantage of receiving some nice benefits and “being in the system”.
SO that's it so far! Friend me on FB, if you'd like! Have caught up with a couple HS friends that way! 🙋♀️
