Lynnette's Story
When I graduated high school, I went to Cerritos College part-time until 2002 when I decided to work full time. I worked for Estee Lauder at Macy's Cerritos Mall since Winter 98' and was promoted to the Lakewood Macy's in 2003, so I chose to quit school and pursue my career with Estee Lauder as the Counter Manager. I was a counter manager for the next 3 years when they moved me back to the Cerritos' Macy's, I hated it there and was unhappy living in California so I decided to uproot myself and move out of state. I moved to Salt Lake City UT in July of '06 and transferred from Macy's to Nordstrom's. Alot of people always ask me why Utah, the main reason was to become independent and be on my own. My brother and his wife had been living there with their son, my nephew since 2003. I lived with them for a few months until I was settled. back to school and finish. So, I took a leap of faith and quit Nordstrom, applied at the local community college, transferred my credits from Cerritos and began looking for a new job. I got hired at the state hospital as a receptionist part-time and had a full load of classes. A year later I received my AA in general studies. Spring 08' I applied at the University of Utah and have been accepted. I start classes this Fall. It took me a long time to realize what I want to do with my life. I have always been independent and the idea of marriage and a family is something that can wait. I want to get a great education and a career first and make something of myself. This summer I have been volunteering at the local Boy's and Girls Club working with the 8 to 10 year olds. I want to get my bachelors in elementary education with an emphasis in child development. I think that I would make a great teacher and am excited to start this new chapter in my life.
