Lynwood's Story

I was born in a little house on N Vyne Street (Happy Hill) in Rocky Mount NC on September 30, 1949. At an early age my family moved across town to Armstrong Projects. Me and my 6 siblings: 2 sisters and 4 brothers were raised by our mother (Mrs Elsie Bellamy), It is with a heavy heart and sadness that I note that our dear mother is no longer with us. She departed this world on January 1 2019. (Rest In Paradise mom ❤️🙏). Well, my father drifted in and out of my life and I knew of him but I never did really know him. He passed away on April 4 2002. (RIP) While growing up, I attended O.R. Pope Elementary School, S.C. Baskerville Elementary School, JW Parker Junior High School, and Booker T. Washington Senior High School. I didn't do much while in High School, although, I knew I could have done more academically. I was just an average student who kept a low profile and did my best to stay out of trouble. I just wanted to graduate and make my mom proud. While in high school, my favorite classes were Algebra and French. Oh, and thanks to Gurney Brown teaching me how to play the trumpet ; Mr Woods allowed me to become a member of the BTW High School Band. "The Greatest High School Band Ever". Two days after graduating from High School, I moved to Queens NY and nine months later (March 1968) I joined the US Marine Corps. I completed Basic Training at Parrish Island SC in May 1968 and my first duty assignment was with the 1st Marines Aircraft Wing in Chu Lai, Vietnam as a Supply Warehouseman (August 1968 - September 1969 ). Sadly, I learned that one of our classmate, Marine Private First Class Larry Dubose was killed in Vietnam in November 1968. ("RIP my Brother" - Semper Fi). After leaving Viet Nam in 1969, I spent a few months at Camp Lejuene NC, 1 year at a Marine Barracks, in Colts Neck NJ and 1 year at Camp Courtney Okinawa, Japan and then back to Camp Lejuene for my last duty assignment in the Marine Corps. as honorably discharged from the Corps with the Rank of Sergeant (E-5). I returned to Rocky Mount after leaving the Marine Corps in 1972. I worked a number of odd jobs and attended Nash and Edgecombe Tech. A year and a half later, It became clear to me that civilian life wasn't what I wanted at that time, so in December 1973, I re-enlisted in the Military, This time I entered the US Air Force as an Airman First Class (E-3) Administrative Specialist. I spent over 18 1/2 years in the Air Force and during my tour of duty, I was stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base (AFB) NC (1973 -1976), Galena Airport, Alaska (1976 - 1977), Pope AFB NC (1977 -1981), Nellis AFB Las Vegas, NV (1981 - 1985), Lindsey Air Station Wiesbaden, West Germany (1986 - 1990), and Columbus AFB MS (1990 -1992). I retired at Columbus Air Force Base in July 1992. with the rank of Master Sergeant (E-7). My favorite duty assignments were Lindsey Air Station Germany and Nellis AFB Nevada. While at Nellis AFB, I was a member of a special unit that was part of a National Defense Top Secret Special Project. I was instrumental in helping to build the first unit administration office from the ground up. I have many great memories of Germany and (maybe one day I will share some of them with you). While station at Seymour Johnson AFB, in Goldsboro, NC; I met my soulmate "Bobbie Whitfield" . She is the love of my life . Bobbie and I have been married for 45 yrs. We are blessed with 2 beautiful daughters, 3 beautiful grandkids, and 2 wonderful son-in-laws. At the present, my wife and I resides in Hampton, VA. We have lived in Hampton for 30 years. After retiring from the military, I was employee at Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton VA as a Medical Records Specialist (Coding Support Analyst) for 15 years before retiring in September 2011.. "God is Good and so is life". "I'm blessed" "And that's my story." lebellamy. 06/14 Updated: 06/15 05/22/16 02/13/19 03/28/23
