Martin's Story
Life
I joined the Army in 1988 after a short time in college. I went to a language school in California. I became a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and was assigned to a company in Fort Bragg. My job was to Interpret and Translate Spanish<>English.
I spent nine months in the Middle East. I was in Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Desert Storm.
I returned to Ft. Bragg, finished my enlistment then returned to Grapevine for a short time. I went back to school. I was a Spanish/Latin American Studies Major.
Shortly after that, I moved to South Texas and spent five years there. Ten years ago, I moved to Austin.
I've been married for nine years. My wife and I are trilingual (American Sign Language, English, Spani...Expand for more
sh) interpreters. We are active in the Austin Deaf community. We find our work very fulfilling. Norma Iris, my wife, studied to become an Interpreter for the Deaf in Corpus Christi, TX.
We have no children but have a feisty lab/JRT mix named Tucker. Our siblings have given us 7 beautiful nieces and nephews. Since we don't have any children of our own, we play the part of the uncle and aunt that spoil all the kids.
My wife and I are Jehovah's Witnesses we attend an American Sign Language Congregation. All our worship events (meetings and ministry) take place in Sign Language. We have many Deaf friends all over the country and in the Carribean and Latin America. Not a day goes by that we don't use Sign Language (ASL).
