Magdalena's Story
School
I played volleyball during my freshman and sophomore years. There were two nuns that helped coach the team- Sister Teresita and Sister Ana. We always used to lose to Vedruna because we were always psyched out on account that they were a very strong team. We always used to joke that we were going to play at the Munich Olympics, we really thought we were that good! HEH, HEH During one of those two years the soft drink Dr.Pepper came out. I used to think that it tasted like cherry cough medicine. I still do!
During Freshman English class, our teacher who was a very "hip", "cool" and "groovy" college student at the UPR taught us about world politics and the ROTC movement there. I was encouraged by her to attend the free concerts given on Sundays at a music academy. I eventually learned to play the accordion and joined a church band. I found out a couple of years after graduation that she had passed away. She was in her early 40's. She had mentioned to me that they had found a birthmark on her back a few months before I graduated in May 1974. I guess it was malignant. She was interested in learning to play the accordion and I used to stay after school in my senior year to teach her. She managed to learn to handle the small accordion very well. In our Senior year the first male teacher joined the staff and all the girls were all "ga ga" over him...tall, light brown hair, light brown eyes...HMMMM
During my Senior year there was a snafu on the day I was to take my College entrance examination boards, so I ended up taking one of the tests in February instead of November.
The Senior year class trip ( La Fuga) was exciting; we went to the beach on Vega Baja.
