Malcolm's Story
West High School â Class of 1963 Memory Book Questionnaire -- updated
Name: Malcolm Goekler
Born in Riverside, CA
Grade School: various, graduated from Kenilworth
Higher Education: U of AZ with a BS Chemical Engineering
Occupation: Engineer, Inventor moving into senior manufacturing management
Retired in 2000
Married to Susan Goekler for 21 years (not a West graduate)
Susan has 2 children (my first wife, Tina died in 1990 with no children) we have 3 grandchildren
No Military Service
Hobbies: Raising orchids (41 years), design, build and or restore live steam engines, adventure travel (Africa, Amazon, Borneo, Central America, Tibet, Oman, etc.)
Significant Events: Finding Susan in Costa Rica, (5) US Patents, and I thought I might be a good middle manufacturing (plant) manager, but in my early forties I somehow became a VP of Manufacturing with (5) plants scattered across the country? With manufacturing moving to China, I was âretiredâ early â which was fine with me.
Most interesting event: Susan I...Expand for more
traveled to Africa in 1995 and accepted an invitation from a student in the US to visit his village in Ghana. This student had been seized by the village Elders as their king and he said if you let me go back to the US to finish my PhD , I promise to bring you âresourcesâ from the US â unknown to us we were the resources as we came to help (new roof for the school, books, supplies etc.). The Elders decided to have us seized so like the king we too would be obligated to continue to help the village â we are now priest-kings (after much training) and sub-chiefs and we still help.
Best memories: In Mr. Fawcettâs chemistry class I fell asleep after taking a quiz. The next day he gave me a real bad time â I think partly because I aced the test. Some freshmen girls who knew me from Mary Coyleâs would go out to the parking lot, take down the top on my 57â black Plymouth convertible and then insist that I give a ride â they did this more than once, and yes, I would always give them a ride.
