Mallory's Story

Life It’s been ‘quite a ride’ since Riverview. I reluctantly went off to Manatee Junior College (AKA Bradenton U) and received an AA in Fine Arts. In hind-sight it was a great move. I was able to live at home, hold down 2 jobs, karate, volunteer work at Ringling and Doctor’s Hospital, enjoyed the ‘night life’ (remember this was back in the Disco Days :) and made some wonderful friends who I’m still in contact with today. The next year I worked at Maas Brothers, downtown Sarasota. I was then able to attend FSU without having to finance it or having to work! I received my degree in Apparel Design and Merchandising with a Minor in Business. The next few years were a potpourri of experiences. I designed clothes for private clients, worked in display design for malls through a major corp out of New York, designed ads & logos, worked at the Ringling Arts Festivals, traveled across the US for several months and much more. In 1985 I opened a boutique called Studio 2 in Tampa’s Hyde Park Village with a college friend. We had a lot of press and some famous clients. When we split in 1991 I was ready for a new experience. I was approached by a friend to come work for him – of ALL things as a stock broker (now known as an investment banker)! Fast forward 16 years later I’m still a broker at Calton & Associates in Tampa. My husband, Sal, is a native of Sicily, Italy. He has a home and property in Santo Stefano Quisquina in the province of Agrigento. We visit his family every few years as well as other travels throughout Europe and the State...Expand for more
s. He speaks several languages besides his native tongue and is a master craftsman in marble and granite. We have one son, Duncan, who is 7 this year. He plays soccer and is quite good at it (like his dad). A year ago he started guitar lessons…must be in the blood as his Italian counterparts are all musically gifted. He speaks a little Italian, can say ‘thank you’ in 8 languages and is spoiled rip-roarin’-rotten by his Sicilian relatives and especially his auntie Leslie. I have to get my creative ‘fix’ on the side. I’ve done faux-finish and mural work, including Trompe l’oeil for businesses and private clients. In 2004 I had to opportunity to work with California artist John Pugh (a master at Trompe l’oeil) on a mural at the Sarasota County Health Center. He has a very impressive website . I’ve been trying to talk him into a speaking engagement at Ringling or a book-signing in Tampa. That same year Sal & I won a contest put on by Moen and Vern Yip for our kitchen rennovation. We received a nice check, and Vern spent the day with us. Vern was one of the designers on Trading Spaces and now hosts 2 new shows: Design Star and Deserving Design on HGTV. We tried to convince him to take us on the road with him. Super nice guy! Life has been good so far, but there’s still a lot I want to experience. We are busy renovating, traveling and searching for the proverbial money tree out back. Once we find it we’re buying a cottage in Monterey, the flat in Venice and that villa in Santorini! I’d love to hear from friends and classmates.
