Janice's Story

I hope you remember me as that goofy girl who was always smiling and game for anything. I liked being a part of the band family and wanted everyone to like me. Those years of band are my favorite and strongest memories of high school. I was surrounded by fun people who were active and diverse. I suppose I always wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. I was always happy at school and was fond of most of my teachers. My only trauma was fifth grade math. Thanks to Ricky Hopper, I survived. As it turns out, teaching suits me. I love books and research. I love to help people get to the point of understanding. My favorite ways to relax are reading and horse back riding. Truly, just being around the horse I lease is soothing. That has become my obsession in life now. The wildest thing I ever did in school was bring vodka and orange juice to drink in class. We were, after all, the Party Hardy class of '79. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a pot of coffee, great colleagues, and a sense of humor to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My inspiration comes from different places; sometimes it's a former teacher like C.J. McNaughton or a great book or line from a writer. Some days it's the students who inspire. Last year the district asked me to help chair the English Department at YHS. I still feel like it was a back-handed compliment. They only asked because the woman they promoted over me needed to take maternity leave. That's how my career has been from the start; a series of lucky breaks. I've lived only one year in Sweden as an exchange student - the rest was either i...Expand for more
n Ypsi, living at home during college, or Ann Arbor. I went to Eastern and worked at Carty's Music to fund school. I've been teaching at YHS since 1985. I only moved to Ann Arbor when I married a second time. My biggest surprise in life is that people have hidden agendas. I'm still pretty naive about believing people's b.s. but I have been burned enough by some to be really wary. I don't need material things to be happy anymore; my house is a place to store stuff I don't really need. My sons have taught me that life is short and precious; losing my first and having surgery save my second's life has aged and mellowed me. Now I just count down the year's until I can retire and pursue a life among horses. It's really strange to see Kevin Campbell here on classmates; he was my first love. Hi Kevin! I'm so glad you liked me in 6th grade. Thanks for teaching me to kiss. My best friend is still Astrid Dalley. She would tell you I haven't changed - I'm still game for anything; but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as reserved. I'm more cautious than I used to be. I have no interest in fashion or style. I'm still low-maintenance. I still have a pet dog; can't seem to live without one. They provide a certain sense of security I need. If I could have one do-over, I'd fall for horses instead of boys. I've suffered way too much heart-ache at the hands of men. My husband is the only man who's stayed faithful to me. In 10 years, I hope to be retired. I'm going to get there by hanging one tight to my sanity and praying public schools don't collapse before then.
