Manny's Story
Life

School
My years at St. Brendan were a mixed bag. I was shy, quiet and not particularly popular. I liked most of my classmates, but I could not understand why a certain few had an intense dislike of me, which rubbed off on others. The 7th and 8th grades were the worst. However, I would enjoy seeing my classmates again, even those who made life miserable for me back then.
My years at Loyola were much better. Again, I was not among the more popular students, but I had a small circle of friends. I did well in most of my classes, but I wish I could have been more actively involved in class and had gotten my teachers to know me better. I had the most fun in senior year.
College
I was happy to have been accepted at UCLA. I was able to enroll in FSP in the summer and made many friends before the fall. I wanted to experience many things, which prevented me from focusing on one thing at a time. I did many th...Expand for more
ings, including working at the Students' Store in Bearwear, doing student government briefly, doing tours of the student union to new students during Orientation, volunteering at UniCamp for several summers, and being involved in Mardi Gras. Unfortunately, I did not do as well in school as I was capable of. I did very well in some classes, while I barely passed others. If I were able to do it all over again, I would study better and get a study buddy or study group for as many classes as I could; I would have tried to get into the Communication Studies program but would otherwise have still done Political Science as a major; I would have joined a community service group such as the Asian Educational Project; I would have joined Samahang Pilipino; I would have made getting a high GPA a high priority; I would have made getting into graduate school another high priority; I would have tried to live in the dorms or get an apartment near campus. In any case, my years at UCLA rank among my most enjoyable experiences to date.
