Marc's Story

Workplace My life has been research, biomedical writing, media relations for academic medical institutions, public relations at international agencies in Washington, DC, then Director of Scientific Communications at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. I'm now back in Maryland working at FDA as the senior science communication advisor to the director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (gene therapy, blood and blood safety, tissue and cell transplantation, pandemic flu, vaccine, bioterrorism). After college I earned an MS in environmental health sciences and a PhD in biology. I lived for a number of years in NYC, RI, Maine, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and now Tennessee. Among other experiences, I've been a public affairs officer for academic medical institutions (Johns Hopkins and now St. Jude Children's Research Hospital)placing stories with major broadcast news outlets (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, BBC), newspapers, and magazines. I've also done freelance for a number of publications including the New York Times and San Jose Mercury News; and written six books for lay readers in various areas of medicine and drug abuse. I've been lucky enough to have wonderful adventures in my career, ...Expand for more
from arranging stories for Johns Hopkins AIDS Service while at the annual international AIDS meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, to working at an international conference on circumpolar pollution issues in Anchorage, Alaska on behalf of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, a client of the agency I worked for at the time. I've traveled around the country, been on freelance jobs in South America (Brazil and Argentina), been on the Oprah Winfrey and Leeza shows discussing human medical research, and managed to be married, divorced, and the very proud father of two strapping young men, one of whom went into the Marines and then joined me when I was in Memphis--he went to University of Memphis and is in his last year there. The other son is finishing up at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV. I am now engaged to a fabulous woman who is more than I could have hoped for. Wedding is June 2009. It hasn't all been easy; in fact it's been an enormous challenge at times, but my career got put together piecemeal, almost without planning. One thing lead to another; one adventure to another. Like most everyone my age, my bio could roll on in order to cover all that's happened over the years. But I'll stop here.
