Marcelino's Story

Life Hi. A lot of you don't know me, but I graduated in 1987 with the rest of you. I kept to myself a lot, but I was into a few extracurricular activities. I was in choir for two years, JROTC for three, the French Club for a year, the Art Club for a year, NHS for three years, Spanish NHS for two, and the Swim Team for a semester. I'm sure I missed a few things, but that's okay. After high school I went to work full-time for two years before going to Mountain View College. I stayed there for a few years because I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life. I joke to my friends that I was there for so long because I was looking for girls. Anyways, in 1991 I met a girl there named Loucinda, and we were married in February of 1993. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing. In December of that year, our first son, Jordan Marcelino, was born. Then in 1995, our first daughter, Rachel Mariela, was born. In the meantime, I was doing all sorts of jobs, from furniture mover to bill collector. Then in 1997, in the spur of the moment (I do a lot of things that way), I joined the Army. That's why I missed our ten-year reunion; I was in Boot Camp. I've seen much of the planet, and I want to see the rest of it before I die. I've been to Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Kuwait, Afganistan, Iraq, and right now I'm in Hawaii. I'm sure to go to Korea next. I would also like to vistit Japan with my familia, if I could. While in the Army, my wife and I have had two more children. My last daughter, Makayla Sabren, was born in 2004 while I was in Iraq, and my last son, Lino Esteban, was born in 2005, right after arriving to Hawaii. I've been so busy with work that I haven't had a chance to learn to surf yet. I'll do it if it's the last thing I do before I die. So I guess that's it. I don't know what else there is to say about myself. I hope that anyone reading this will be interested enough to try and reach me. It's been years since I lived in Dallas, and I would like to know what's happening there. Military Hi. I enlisted in the Army in January of 1997 and went off to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO in February for Boot Camp. For those of you who don't know this, the Army is like another country. Soldiers have their own vocabulary and sets of values. It takes a while for a person to learn everything, but there are Drill Sergeants there to help you learn as fast and as much as possible. Help is too soft a word. They beat the Army Way into you. of us that didn't break went on to graduate and become real soldiers. I went straight to Ft. Sam Houston, TX from there and spent the next year and a half at school to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). I was a reservist for a year, but I wanted to see the world, so I went Active in the year 2000. I left for Germany in April of that year. I spent a few months trying to get a place ready for my wife and two kids (at the time), but was deployed to Kosovo before they could leave the states. I spent about six months away from my family. I ended up working in a Labor & Delivery ward in my hospital there, and left for Kosovo one more time in October of 2002. I didn't get home until April of 2003, which was okay with me since I missed the Iraq invasion by a month being there. I decided that I had seen enough of the world and was getting ready to leave the Army for Texas, when I was told that I wasn't going anywhere. The Army was keeping me in case they needed a nurse in Iraq. So guess where I went next for a year. That's right... Iraq. I left in January 2004 (a month before my third child was to be born) and stayed until January 2005. I met a lot of interesting people while I was there; some of them Americans and some of them Iraqis. Amid the constant noise and paranoia of dying without warning, Iraq was where I grew up. Facing death on a daily basis is a very sobering and introspective experience. I don't recommed this for anyone, but I have to say that I matured greatly in that year away from my wife and three kids. I have a deeper appreciation for my family. I have always cherished them, but the knowlege that I could have been taken away from them without ever getting to know my newest daughter only makes me want to hold on to them more. While in Iraq I figured that I may as well see if I could go to another side of the world, so I reinlisted for another five years to go to Hawaii. I left Germany for Hawaii last year (with my family this time) and arrived in Honolulu on the Fourth of July with my VERY pregnant wife. Had we waited another three days, the airlines would not have let her fly. She gave birth to our son in August in the hospital where I work. It's a big pink hospital called Tripler Army Medical Center. So far I haven't gone anywhere but home and work, and that's okay with me. I spent too much time deployed to other countries away from my family and I intend to stay put as long as I can and just bask in teh glow that a family brings a man.
