Margaret 's Story

After high school I studied at San Jose State, but then dropped out to go to work, a decision that I would come to regret. I'd been unhappy living at home, and I needed to get away and to be on my own. I told myself I could always come back and finish school later. While at SJSU I became engaged to a fellow student from New Jersey. I moved to New York expecting to get married, but the engagement didn't last. I loved New York, though, and spent several more years there. I was a computer operator on Wall Street, a medical assistant to four ob-gyns, a secretary for a Madison Avenue ad agency and an office manager for a small film production company. In my free time I developed a lifelong love for classic films thanks to New York's many revival theaters. I also was a volunteer for a political campaign and acted in a children's theater. I loved the excitement of living in New York City, but my years there were often lonely, and I was constantly homesick for California. I returned to the Bay Area on my 25th birthday. The following year I went to work for KRON-TV Channel 4 in San Francisco, where I would spend the next 33 years. I began my career there as an executive secretary. Later I moved to the promotion department, where I wrote announcer copy and press releases, assisted in production, managed our inventory of on-air promos and scheduled them on the station log. My ultimate ambition was to earn a First Class FCC License and transfer to the Engineering Dept., wh...Expand for more
ich I did in 1980. I spent three years as a master control operator on the graveyard shift, then I joined the KRON studio crew. I learned cameras, audio, graphics and video playback for KRON's news programs. I loved the excitement of live TV, and still miss it. The one thing I don't miss is working nights, weekends and holidays. My first marriage to a newspaper reporter ended after four years, and I suspect that part of the reason was the crazy hours and odd days off that are par for the course in the broadcasting industry. I have been married since 1986 to Al Tetzlaff, a fellow KRON technician. It is a second marriage for us both. Al is a native of Portland, Oregon, which has become my second favorite city. We have no children. When I was in my forties I went back to school part-time and earned an Associate's Degree with honors from City College of San Francisco. Since then I have taken upper division courses at SFSU but dropped out again when eldercare responsibilities began to require more of my time. If I ever do go back again, I plan to major in English. Now that I am retired I spend my time reading voraciously, working out at the Y, watching classic movies, cooking, baking and dining out, and above all wasting time on the internet! I enjoy all kinds of music, especially oldies, classic rock, Big Band, popular tunes from the Tin Pan Alley era, classical, jazz and opera. You can also find me on Facebook and Instagram, though I'm more of a lurker than a poster.
