Margaret's Story

Life 2005-Present My goodness, what a difference a handful of years makes. Looks like I came back to KY after all. I even gave up working in IT and working for corporations... I love California, but just couldn't afford it any longer. It wasn't the money as much as it was the wear and tear working that hard had taken on this old body. I live quietly in Audubon Park now. No longer the flashy go-getter. However, something I did in San Francisco as volunteer work has now become a job in Louisville. In SF, I often worked with the Religious Coalition for the Homeless, fed the street folks, and donated time and resources to help the homeless situation in that city. Being the bleeding heart that I am and will always remain, I could not step over or around the bodies of folks begging on the street, or asleep on the grates. I was never able to erase those suffering, vacant eyes from my mind. After a brief tinkering in local Louisville Democratic politics, I found a job working for a non-profit agency that is dedicated to reaching out to the suffering homeless and addicted. Now that is long way from the free-wheeling days in California. I will admit I live in genteel poverty these days, but I feel I'm doing something much more important by helping others facilitate recovery. I am neither an alcoholic nor an addict, but one doesn't have to be to see the benefits and life-changing effects of working the 12 steps. Some might say: My, how you have fallen... but I prefer to acknowledge that this is my way of giving back for both the bounty I've shared and the bounty I've squandered. Or, perhaps this is my way of being a nun. That was, after all, a childhood dream. I do not know. Nonetheless, I'm back in my beloved Kentucky, and while I miss Northern California more than I can say, I doubt if I shall ever have the opportunity to return there again. I will admit, however, before turning to a rather ascetic life, I did have the opportunity to travel to the Netherlands Antillies, Panama, various places in the Caribbean, Mexico several times, Canada as well a...Expand for more
s most of lower 48 states (41, I think). Life 1996-2005 After two divorces, I decided it was time to pack up and make a fresh start with the rest of my life. I sold my house, had a yard sale or two, packed my bags and headed off to San Francisco, California. I felt at home from the moment I arrived. What a difference location makes. This City is a place to come to grips with one's self, remake and clean out the mental cobwebs. No matter how hard one's trys to sit on the fence, it's just not possible here. You work like a crazy, just to make ends meet. You blossom or you run home with your tail tucked between your legs. Thank the good Lord, it was the former for me, not the latter. Since moving here, I've gotten into real estate and information technology. What a mix! When I left Louisville, I was working for the UofL Libraries and I was quite happy working quietly in the bowels of the technical services departments. But alas, there were no library jobs available in SF, although I looked high and low. I worked as a researcher for a web startup for a few months, then went on to become a document designer and proofreader for a large company. From there I became an executive assistant, where my major duty was keeping everyone up-to-date on the latest software. I wrote a few manuals and taught some classes...then, I was offered this job as a technical writer/policy analyst. WOW, is it ever fun. And the best part is, it's not in the Digital Business sector...it's in a traditional corporation. One that actually makes money, instead of devouring venture capital like candy from a Pez dispenser. I haven't been back to the old stomping grounds in a few years, there really isn't alot there to bring me back. I do miss the dogwoods and redbuds in springtime and the blaze of color washing over the hills in fall. But Northern California is now my home. Home of hot tubs, free speech, weird politics, and even weirder people. Ahhh, there's the clue why am so happy in this foggy, densely populated City. It's a great place to visit and a wonderful place to live.
