Margaret's Story
Shortly after graduation, began "raising" my younger foster-siblings when my foster-Mom got sick and later died. For the next decade or so I juggled raising kids with college part-time and work (for an Optometrist as Office Admin/Optician). Kids grew up and I adopted the youngest of them and raised him as my own. He got married in his 20's and they had a daughter, who now also has a son. I went back to school during this time to finish my college goals (one Music BA from Benedictine U., and a Computer Science BS from Northwestern U). The year prior to graduating from Northwestern, I was recruited by IBM as a Network Engineer. IBM's work pace was/is frenetic, and with long hours. The same year that I started the IBM job I married my live-in boyfriend of 9 years. A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with Post-Polio Syndrome (sort of ...Expand for more
like a return to the original Polio symptoms that happens to some Polio victims in middle age). Because of the added stress this put on my body, I could no longer work the long hours that my job required and I had to go on a permanent disability leave. Thankfully IBM benefits have been keeping my head above water, as they say. With regard to my marriage my 20-yr. relationship with my husband ended in divorce last year. We have come to peaceful terms with each other finally, but the last couple of years have been tough ones. I am looking forward to the future, (turn 61 today!) and have great expectations that the next chapter in my life will be the best yet!
