Margaret's Story
Following graduation from Oberlin in 1974, I went to graduate school in psychology. First, receiving my master's degree in human development at University of Kansas in 1975, and then my doctorate at University of Michigan in 1981. In 1975, I married Stuart Owen (Oberlin class of '73) at the end of his 2nd year of med school at U of M. After he finished his residency at U of M in 1980, and I was 9 months shy of defending my dissertation, we moved to Dallas, TX, where my parents lived, and where we've lived since then. t Dallas (UTD) before working for 12 years at a private research foundation, then returned to UTD as associate professor, was promoted to full prof in 2001 and became director of the Center for Children and Families in 2008. Stuart worked as a private practice physician (internal medicine) until retiring 2 1/2 years ago, after 39 years of practice. We have 3 children, all grown, 2 married, and 4 grandchildren, ages 5-7. Am still teaching, doing applied research, and working with the community on matters serving to advance children's healthy development.
